You need to come up with about a hundred more good bands to make up for Celine Dion guys.

That is so funny, Alex! The guy who used to be a member of the Barenaked Ladies came to be an assistant music teacher at my high school in my last year (two years ago). It was a pretty amazing experience to have him play the drums and other instruments with us, even if he was a part of the Barenaked Ladies. Also, I found his picture in one of my history textbooks, where the BL were listed as part of Canadian culture, hahahaha.
Anyway, there are definitely some amazing artists here. The scene has exploded over the past few years. Metric's my favourite by far but there are TONS of others, listed in the other thread. Indie music, in particular.
Even if people say they don't like Celine Dion, her sales and place in history (yes, I know) say something different.
And yes, the requirement of playing a certain percentage of Canadian music is in play. The quota can be either good or bad, since there is some crappy Canadian music. At the same time, lesser-known bands have a chance of being played more often. Shania Twain was elevated to stardom partly because of this quota. It allows for more exposure, of course. If you consider that most of the films played in Canada are not from Canada, then maybe it is better that our radio stations have to fulfill a quota. It's hard to say. At least the Canadian government helps out in some way for both industries.

socan requires a certain % of canadian content to be played on the airways. MAPL (a circle type logo divided into 4 pie slices) is on the back of many cds here to help the radio people determine quickly the level of Canadian involvenemt in the music, artistic performance, production and lyrics.
David Foster is a chap who prouced a lot of early celine dion hits as well as stuff for meatloaf and others. Most recently he produced Michael Buble.
More canadians, Avril Levigne, Diana Krall, Nellie Furtado, Shania Twain (who incedentally is now married to Bryan Adam's former producer Mutt Lang)

to answer the question specifically without going into shit slingling quasi patriotistic idiocy I'd say we have a unique and amazing location next to a huge market with all the advantages that go with it while still maintaining our soveirnty, exposure to diversity and great creative support from the government and a strong, wealthy, culture loving society.
