(Apr 17 06, 12:15)True, but judging by our non-existent film industry, maybe the quota is a good idea, as outlined in one of my earlier posts. Not sure. It gives lesser-known artists a way to get exposure, but not everyone wants to listen to all Canadian music.

it's not lame it's a safe way of dealing with intrusive corporate entertainment practices that seep out of americon...trust me the us have similar measures to ensure a healthy dose of american content

True, but judging by our non-existent film industry,

(Apr 17 06, 12:17)you don't know what you're talking about...shush or learn more please. film is huge here and it's getting bigger plus canadians have a long and interesting history of entertaining ourselfes with our own enterainment on radio and tv, and film...really you don't see the whole picture and carry the same attitude a lot of blinded canadians share. fortunatly it';s not true

it's not really MrDob. Because of CanCon rules it means that indie bands have a much better chance of being played on the radio.
Because of that, it means that labels will sign more canadian indie bands.
Because of that the indie music scene thrives.
Keep in mind that Toronto is second only to NYC for the number of live music venues. Last I checked, and it's more now, was that you can see any of 450 - 500 live music acts on any given night in Toronto.
Which is why NXNE is in Toronto and SXSE is in Austin.
Montreal's music scene was absolute shite until a couple of years ago when the clubs started opening up and then the bands actually had somewhere to play.
and, I'll add in a few more artists:
Leonard Cohen
Brian Adams
Rush
Sam Roberts
Matthew Good Band
Stompin Tom Conners

what's next, banning pit-bulls?

i have a friend who just made a pilot for tv and made the mistake of introducing himself to a screening audience as one of the few canadian producers who actually produce 'entertainment' and not art or auteur driven material...he's plain wrong and said that in front of a number of entertainment folks and drew a large dose of grunts and comments
- Visia0
yeah Jaline, the film industry in Canada is huge. On both the production and creation sides.
- Visia0
Snuggles, I think we should ban all dogs.
Or, at least introduce legislation that requires that your dog has at least 30% CanCon.

And, for Khilled's sake, I'll also add that Halifax is supposedly the next big music epicentre after the last big Montreal boom.
I've yet to see what's coming out of there but I certainly hope it's not just more Great Big Sea kinda shite.
Oh, and Winnepeg has always had a kickass music scene as well.

sounds like entertainment welfare to me.
- mr_snuggles0
Moncton and Halifax were the big places for quality music before the Montreal boom...

I'd like the law too if I didn't have to hear gord downie wailing away everytime I turn on the radio.

Bands that borrow from various cities are also great.
khilled, I wasn't necessarily saying that it was my point of view that Canada has a 'non-existent film industry'. I just mean that it isn't recognized the way it should be and that many people make fun of the industry. I guess I should've clarified.
I make sure to see tons of great Canadian films every few months, haha.
- Visia0
actually MrDob, it's intended to prevent "welfare entertainment" from taking over. E.g. Britany Spears.
Not that we can keep the stench of that shit from floating up over the border but I'm glad we have at least the air freshener of the CanCon rules to try to fight the odour.
Snuggles: no shit? Fuck, I've been out of the music scene so long I don't know what's going on anymore.

don't forget KRS-ONE!
