Where to raise them? I mean, what country?
Is this just my observation, or are kids in Europe nowadays spoilt brats as they never were before? Obviously, kids were always and everywhere like that, but I'm not sure I saw 10-14 year olds assaulting a police officer who can't do shit about that in my days. Modern law keeps them untouchable and adults are even afraid to comment kids' behaviour on trams and buses.
What's this like in your country?
Am I just looking for an excuse for still not having mine at 32?

that's a point, it's the easter break which means the train home tonight will be full of 14 yr old chav kids fare dodging, smoking and slashing seats.

kids in Europe?
That's quite an enormous generalisation of 25 different countries with 25 different cultures. I'm sure they dont all behave the same...
My own view is raise 'em anywhere, just keep them out of the Cities.
I wont be having kids though.

I think Japan has the most respectful and smart kids... just leave before they get into highschool because the education passed elementary school is torture there.

Japan? Isn't that home to the Kancho ninja kids?

kids are more spoilt nowadays as people generally have more money to spend on their kids.
Kids then take things for granted and it snowballs from there.

Try live in Glasgow...

Quite a few kids in the Canadian schools are doped up on meds, because they cannot control themselves in school. And there are a large number more that have some serious issues.

Japan does have a different society and don't think that all japanese kids fall into the same stereotypical category. My wife set fire to her teacher during high school using liquid-based fertilizer and a cooker lighter. Don't forget where Battle Royale came from.
Although on the surface it's all fine and dandy, high school as well as elementary school suicides on top of teachers killing school kids hit the headlines now and then. It can get quite intense.
As a whole I'd be looking to start my kids off there before university in the UK. It's the difference between walking down the street and seeing a group of boys carrying baseball bats in Japan and the UK. In the UK, I'd probably be looking to run for my life, but in Japan the boys are either returning from or going to baseball practice.
In Japan, there's more emphasis on doing stuff. There's always something to do at some point in the day from sports to afterschool activities to specialist schools.
You still get your group of slackers breaking glass and dealing drugs, but then the Yakuza keeps all that under tabs and in control.
You'll never find a perfect place to raise your kids, you just need to do the best you can.

(Apr 10 06, 04:06)the kancho ninja kids association has spread its operation overseas, keep up for God's sake! You'd better watch your back or you'll get kancho-ed!

I truly believe people should obtain some sort of license deaming them fit to have offspring. Like a drivers license...
In Toronto it was terrible watching these 2nd and 3rd generation welfare families having kids. What are their kids learning, abuse the system like their parents...
At the same time, I do just generally despise children...

I think that you should be able to raise intelligent well rounded (not in the fat sense) whereever you live. Blaming the society in which you live is an easy excuse.
There's an interesing chapter about raising your children in Freakonomics by Steven Levitt. It discusses what you name your children and how it affects their chances in life. Quite amusing.

I blame society's role models today. Ask a kid who they admire the most and I get your ass they say a celebrity. Extra points if they're a sportsperson. Marketers have used tv and internet to infiltrate homes and brainwash today's kids. When they're not being exposed to junk they're eating it and in spades. Look at the tv listings nowadays, we've moved on from reality tv to "let's fix our fucked up lives" programming. Let's send our sprogs to brat camp, let's bring in the super nanny, hell we can't even control our own dogs! I don't know where I'm going with this, I'm on my own in the office and am listening to some very loud Patti Smith.

(Apr 10 06, 03:52)Absolutely what I feel - until I think about how the future is going to be populated by the infinite litters of the fuckwit classes.
Now I kind of feel it's my cathaholic duty to populate my world with More Mes.
I intend to bring my brood up in the countryside, preferably in southern Spain.

Don't blame the media, blame the Grups...

{ I don't know why I wrote 'cathaholic' - Monty Python-esque images bounding, I guess - but I certainly wouldn't seed my DNA for religious reasons. Quite the opposite! }

raise them well and in a place where their minds and bodies can be constantly stimulated, and smack them in the mouth if they give you any trouble.

(Apr 10 06, 04:43)Society doesn't exist. You can't rely on anybody else to raise a decent human being. The only thing "Society" is good for is producing people of such quality that I simply refuse to let my potential offspring walk the same green earth. It's bad enough I have to share it with what is mostly wankers.
I blame "Society" for the ruination of all that is good. It's each man for himself afterall. My advice? Don't have kids, and run like fuck to the finish.
