MacBook Pro. My Story.

ok so decided to get a 2.0ghz 1GB RAM macbook pro, as was in desperate need of a new machine. usual story - couldn't decide between the 17" pb & mbp. figured there was no point getting a pb at this stage.
one of the blokes was extremely helpful at macstore (makes a change) - had some geeky chat with him about the ins and outs. got a discount for being a freelancer, was happy. i explained i wanted the latest revision which he pointed out was now 15 (serial no. W86'15'... ) not 14 as i had originally mentioned...he was like yeah no probs, that's what we have.
paid for it, left a happy bunny. got home. installed all my crap. hooked up online. all was going well...then got this hissing noise, coming out of the speakers...not a constant hiss - up and down actually unbearable. then noticed the back end of the MBP was boiling hot. knew these were problems with the earlier model. checked the serial on the box and it was a W8609 (first lot) - the fuckers had sold me what they are aware of being faulty machines. went ape so rang up the dude (he had given me his card) he started acting all shifty, and basically said he didn't realise i'd realise, and that there were no revised machines in stock. he then said i should have bought a powerbook as the MBP's are a waste of time. WTF!??!??!??
so basically i've been shafted. and now i have a machine which is steaming hot (imagine unbearable hot tap water) with mentalist hissing - my desk is probably about to start warping. also OSX is extrmely dodgy - crashes randomly on programs like imovie. beachballs now and again too. i have 14 days to get a refund (was originally told 30 days) as they supposedly won't have any newer machines for another 2/3 weeks, by which time they won't do a straight swap...
if they have resolved these problems in later models then that's cool, but why the hell haven't they recalled these earlier models, and why are they screwing over loyal customers?

um... give it back?
I bought a 30" Cinema Display and decided I didnt really want a display that big.. they came and picked it up and gave me a full refund. It was easy and all part of the service.
If you've got a serious problem I cant believe they wont deal with it. You've just got to talk to the right people and be polite and firm..
- mynx0
...and speak to/ask to deal with the sales manager in the store, not a sales person.
- aparticularpath0
yeah. return it. you have two weeks to return it and they'll replace that shiz.
plus if it's busted they'll fix it.
- jevad0
Don't be afraid to march back in there - ask for the manager - and tell him everything you just told us.. Then demand a new model.
You only have yourself you blame if you don't.

blame yourself

go through the apple store's business channel. I find that they are always helpful as opposed the regular service people. I assume you use this machine for your freelance design 'small business'. Best of luck.

i have every intention of sorting it out, but obviously now need a laptop and they can't replace it with a newer one yet so will prob have to get a refund then buy again in 3 weeks. Just annoying to have to go back again then wait having installed everything, made it mine etc...

can't you dump a hard drive image to restore on the new machine?
- e-pill0
that sucks but there is no way that you cant send it back for the model you were originally being given.
what is the model # on the receipt??? if the sales man suppose to sell you the latest model then march back in there.
i have the W8611 and yes it gets hot, but it doesnt stay hot, only for maybe a few minutes.
i only got the rainbow ball once and that was b/c i had opened a super large illy file to preview...i learnd to just open the files without previewing.
it hasnt skipped a beat since...i have sound issues meaning weird sounds from speakers or spinning hard drive.
the sound problem can be fixed by launching [garage band or photobooth] do not know why this is the fix but it works [i only read it worked] like isaid i dont or havent gotten the weird sounds.
the apple rep is correct, the mpb is a super machine and yes it is still beta.
you cant trully complain so much knowing the machine is still beta, but hell GMail is still beta too, does that mean it is a bad product...no but you have to take it with precaution.
there should be no reason that apple will not take back your machine. hell you can probably even take that apple store to the [Better Business Bureau] as they sold you something to which they had said it was something else.
i would report them. and contine and get your new MPB.
maYBE this is a great lesson for all of us.
MAKE SURE YOU READ THE FINE PRINT!!!!!!!!
always look over your purchase, in reality you got a NYC brick instead of your car stereo.
always check your goods, its like purchasing clothing, you must check for holes or stains or something to that effect of the construction.

Walk back into the Apple store and say "I came here to chew bubble gum and kick ass........ and right now I'm aaaaall out of bubble gum."
Proceed to kick ass.

it makes me furious just reading the way you were sold the mac book pro.
Sure the machine is in beta stage, at best, but THAT DOES NOT SHOW IN THE PRICES THESE THINGS COST! What exactly are the advantages of having moved to intel when the prices are not lower and all the software will have to be upgraded?
From the times I have used it I can tell you that the performance of rossetta is NOT acceptable for me, it is really like a G3, and all of the Adobe apps won't be ready till well into 2007.
When you get a replacement for it don't expect to be able to use it on your lap either, regardless of whether your wearing shorts or not. It gets very hot, an unbearable, nasty kind of hot too unlike nothing else Ive ever used, and no it doesnt go away, unless you use it for email or browsing and nothing else.
good luck to you, although you're not gonna need it since you are 100% right!

that's BAD! what a fucking cocksucker!! I would go berserk if I was straight up lied to like that. Get back in there and demand a new model, otherwise you're gonna undress the sales guy and have him swim around a pool full of early rev. hot macbooks.
(Please don't misquote this you cunny funts)

I'm sorry to hear that man.
But that is the price you pay to be a beta tester, I say this all the time.People rush to get the latest thing out and pay higher prices for a product it's not yet finished, It's great for apple, cause they start selling earlier, and great for the rest of us that wait untill the product is ready to be used. But for beta testers, it's a huge risk, I work freelance too, I don't know how can you afford to take a big chance like this, and I find it strange also that apple is not paying you to test the computer.
Good luck!

ask them how they would like it if someone sold them a faulty fruity shit + super neat haircut
- turosatano0
what I would do is try and get my money back and not get this machine. Explaining how you were misled into buying exactly what you intended not to buy should be more than enough to walk out of there with every cent of your money.
The mac book pro IS A JOKE. Believe me, sitting there getting the performance of a 2001 G3 ibook out of photoshop while generating enough heat noise and energy for it to lift off and start flying around the room really created an impression on me.

return it and get a pc

ooh thats ugly...
I have an M70 which is fairly ugly too.... Can't Dell hire some decent industrial designers?
