OMG:
"A potent emblem, the 2006 logo both reminisces as a target and communicates action. It’s circular, three-dimensional relief in green is evocative of a button, implying a call to action—click here to go. Offsetting the Q and placing the tail only inside the letter’s counter creates the sensation that the button may have already been pushed, that action is already underway and something is about to happen.
Subtle lens flares along the raised edges give the image a metallic newness and reinforce the lines of force established by the jutting diagonal and off-center, variable weight letter."

bahahahahahaha! yes you read that right... "Subtle lens flares".

I think you guys are all just being haters. If you think the logo is such crap then I challenge you to do better. You can point out how much you hate all the 3d going around all day and try to one up each other on metaphors for how much you hate the green but put your money where your mouth is. Thats right, I'm calling all of you out, I challenge all of you to design a better quark logo. go.

Dealth to Quark!
Countless hours dealing with their retro peice of crap SW. They are only now all "user friendly" because Indesign has a gun to their head.
The 2005 branding is solid. I doubt Sicolamartin actually copied anyone but there were pretty stupid not to do any research. As for these quarkvsindesign.com people, they are not in any position to talk about brand identity given what they have going on.
I am all for having more options then macradobia, but Quark sucks, the software sucks, the new logo sucks - die die die!

and sorry but given the time and $$$ that probably went into this, i do think most of us could do much better.
not necessarily the designer's fault though. i'm sure many good concepts were lost to boardroom compromise.

nice Q!

wow, that firm really downplayed the mark on their site, not showing it until the four frame in the folio. haha

if Quark had approached me to design their logo, my outcome would have been different, possibly better, possibly not.
the point of criticism isn't to shove in someones face that they did something bad. it is to encourage them to do something better.
there are basic and fundimental problems with much of the corporate design work being spouted out at the moment, with the flip side being that corporations don't have the luxery of being wild and avant garde. there are ways of being successful within the realm of corporate marks, and in the current trend has not be faring well.
Granted, all logos will eventually suffer the test of time. Design is partly about image...it is giving something a coherent and well thought out form. But it is also about solving a solution that isnt forgotten in a matter of moments. That is advertising.
Me designing a spec logo for Quark proves nothing because it is simply spec work, and changes nothing. Me, on the other hand, providing critical feedback on a logo can only hope to help them down the line, or at least help them become better designers in the near future.
Do I have all the answers? No, but I do have some well informed opinions. Design needs dialogue. Your 'call' adds nothing but a 'what if'. Again, critics aren't about putting money where your mouth is, it is about helping others think and rethink think solutions.

well said boxcar.

agreed. I tend to like to play devil's advocate. I'm not a Quark fan by any stretch. My only interest was in sparking a kind of Photoshop Friday around this. What I have accomplished is catching some of the heat on behalf of quark, I think I'll send them a bill. . .

My first response to it was that it reminded me of the Xbox 360 logo.

damn that does suck.

Bad, bad, bad. Just bad.
