if Quark had approached me to design their logo, my outcome would have been different, possibly better, possibly not.
the point of criticism isn't to shove in someones face that they did something bad. it is to encourage them to do something better.
there are basic and fundimental problems with much of the corporate design work being spouted out at the moment, with the flip side being that corporations don't have the luxery of being wild and avant garde. there are ways of being successful within the realm of corporate marks, and in the current trend has not be faring well.
Granted, all logos will eventually suffer the test of time. Design is partly about image...it is giving something a coherent and well thought out form. But it is also about solving a solution that isnt forgotten in a matter of moments. That is advertising.
Me designing a spec logo for Quark proves nothing because it is simply spec work, and changes nothing. Me, on the other hand, providing critical feedback on a logo can only hope to help them down the line, or at least help them become better designers in the near future.
Do I have all the answers? No, but I do have some well informed opinions. Design needs dialogue. Your 'call' adds nothing but a 'what if'. Again, critics aren't about putting money where your mouth is, it is about helping others think and rethink think solutions.
