smoking on public transport is a different thing entirely. Anyone in the Kings Cross fire will soon tell you why smoking on the underground is a bad idea.
Pubs are for smoking and drinking. It's that simple, and this law is simple willy holding for people like de4k who will insist on playing with fire and complaining about burns.

-------------yea we all said the same about irish pubs. like people said the same when they banned smoking on buses and in cinemas and in playschool.
trust me, it's weird but you'll get used to it.

as an ex smoker, I think it's great. Fuck if you can afford to smoke in England, you're earning too much and should be social stigmatised anyway.
only thing is though...whats next? next you'll be telling me crack is bad for you or something...

I reckon it's good news, although I thought the law about no smoking where they served food would have been better all round.
In regards to the MP's voting for it, aren't they just reflecting their voters opinions? Isn't that how it works?
Also my understanding is it's aimed at protecting the people
who work in bars and pubs from passive smoking rather than those who drink there.Upside is it's given The Daily Mail, Moth and Kilroy something to rant about.
Everyone's happy.

-------------------among the explanations in ireland were that the legal issue protecting people in the workplace from smoke had to be extended to bar workers, simple as that.
but really there also saw it as a cheap route to reducing the strain smokers place on the health system. They say that banning shit was better than spening 10's of millions of euros ever year.

(Feb 15 06, 04:09)problem with that is if smoking sales were completely banned the health service would collapse through lack of money... we need smoking and smokers!
Ironic isn't it?

(Feb 15 06, 03:59)Fuck them. These are "passive people" - same people who take shit bar wages then whine about not getting tips. I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire.

(Feb 15 06, 04:22I got that from a mate who runs the PR department of a Lung Cancer charity! His words not mine, but you are right about the healthcare system.. that's changing!
//in any case the NHS shouldn't treat anyone with smoking or drinking related diseases. It's their own fault, let them die..
