Design fuels the fire that is consumption.

nothing witout it's robot car.
Nope, sorry, that's david.
I don't think you can define design. It is too borad. Information design is not the same as product design.
You can design a bridge. You can design a poster. One is to sell gigs, one is to traverse a river.
Too broad a subject.

(Jan 24 06, 06:43)I don't believe that's true.
How does the Harry Beck's underground map do that. It simply aids people to navigate the tube with greater ease – solving a problem.
I do agree that wanky 'design for designers' fuels consumption. Stuff like this:
http://www.designboom.com/contem…
Who needs more shit like that. It doesn't help you sit more comfortably, just makes you look like a 'designer'
This chair on the other hand does help me sit:
http://www.aeronchair.co.uk/
so that is good design

can't you see yoou're obsessed with your job titles???
- mr_snuggles0
but it becomes subjective when you add the word "good" in front of design..
Not everyone finds the aeron chair comfortable or nice to look at, so what's "good" for the goose, isn't necessarily "good" for the gander...

neenaw.
Design is problem solving:Problem: I want people to come to my gig.
Solution: Design a poster to be displayed to people telling them where/when the gig is!
Problem: I can't get to the other side of the river whilst remaining dry.
Solution: build a bridge.
Both design (the process of problem solving and creating a solution)

mmm. that map is part of the service offered that people buy into. I wouldn't pay to use the tube if i had no way of figuring out which way i wanted to go.
not that i'm agreeing with what any of you fruits are saying.

(Jan 24 06, 06:58)So is rock climbing. So is and sodoku or whatever that numbers game is called.
Still too broad a subject to define in one sentance.
By the way, I'm skt. Shhhh.

(Jan 24 06, 06:58)lol, i said TITLES, no titties! lol, as in the title of a thoroughly enjoyable book.
- Baskerville0
You don't have to pay to use the tube to get a copy of the map:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/maps/…
It's part of a service but doesn't have to be. They could have a rubbish map and people would still have to use the tube.
I could just have easily said A-Z. etc
- mr_snuggles0
but obviously if the tube map was not a "good" design it would fail to communicate the message of "go here, to get here" and people would get disoreinted and fall in front of trains and die horrible deaths...
- Baskerville0
hey "neenaw" ;o)
Rock climbing is NOT design.
Problem: I need to get up this cliff face.
Solution: Design a lift or helicopter etc
Unless you argue that god (or evolution) designed your arms and legs to help you get up the cliff. But then discipler might come along and turn this thread from a design to an 'intelligent design' thread.
On that subject Design by it's very nature should be intelligent, there's no need to state it again before the word design!

all about a sense of time and fashion.
