hee hee, just fanning the flames of debate. It's good to see a thread about design for once is all.
If you had the option of writing on here or continuing a 2 day long getty image search I'm sure you'd feel the same.

I didn't say it was design, I said it was problem solving.
And I would agree that design is problem solving. I just don't think solving mathematical problems (bridge building) can be defined in the same was as solving other design problems like getting someone to old street (information design).
Anyway, why do we even need to define it?

it's human nature for us to define and clasify something, it's the only way we feel like we're in control of the world around us...
- Baskerville0
I meant this to be what you feel design is to you rather than an official definition.
Oh god, I think I've seen every image in Getty's database. I can now state with proof that 90% of their images feature one or more of the following:
• Laptop
• Mobile phone
• smile

i hear ya Bask.
Just dont worry your pretty head about this one. Words have uses based on how they are used (or signified by the signifier). and Deisng is one of those words that has a billion subtly different uses. No ones righter than t'other. You'll spend hours trying to figure out how you as a graphic designer are the same as an architect but then architect is the same as a product designer but different to graphic and graphic is the same...
na mean?

(Jan 24 06, 07:26)actually i think its more to do with people with egos and grandiose ideas about what they do for a living.
- kelpie0
shut up yer shit stirrin Kuz ;)
this question I've always found impossible to define - I think if your looking for a unifying factor, it would have more to do with the process your brain goes through when presented with your brief (I mean all design however disparate starts with a brief) than what you produce or how you produce it, imo

everyone has an ego, Kuz.
sheesh, i expected more from you..
- kelpie0
what is service design btw? I'm stumped...

If you're looking for a definition for design:
1548, from L. designare "mark out, devise," from de- "out" + signare "to mark," from signum "a mark, sign."
So it looks like the word design refers to mark making and signs ie modern day graphic design. Woohoo, us graphic designers are the true, rightful owners of the term design.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the french word for art: dessin?
hmmm

Janne! dude! I have the biggest fucking ego in the world! I am obsessed with my ego!
everytime i make a post on this damn forum, no matter how inane, i read it over like a million times! That's how obsessed i am with my ego. I'm entranced by it.
I'm just saying, think about it, the word design comes from the latin - from Designate - it is simply about a purposeful action "she designed to meet him in the bar" as in Planned. And look how it's been appropriated by the asymmetric hair-cut brigade to mean "answering a brief". Cos that how they think! Thats what it is to THEM!
Thats all. But it IS fascinating.

(Jan 24 06, 07:40actualyl, i think i'm right, and it is linked to the word designate - which is the same as mark-out, or stand-out. But at the same time it becomes something with a purpose, like a plan "i had designs or her crumpets", before becoming the very act of constructing that plan. I think
