i think that if you look at the etymology of the word design like y'all are doing, kuz and baskerville, it highlights what exactly it is that is unique to the term. intent, craft, thought...
it is solving a problem ("devise" highlighting the engineering aspect of design that we see at times), but with the added intention of fulfilling an aesthetic need or reaching an aesthetic ideal at the same time. hence we see also the notion of a mark or a sign, which nods towards the french "dessin" and the practise of representation and symbolism.
