careful though - in a brand new car there's a delicate balance between breaking it in the way you drive, and not trashing the transmission by revving too high in the first 5 or 10 k miles.

Touché. I'll take it easy and save it for the empty freeways.

the break in period is usually from 0k until your first scheduled service... not sure if VW is the same as Audi butmine was 8k on the A3.

Thanks for the heads up.

an audi or an sti would have done well :) especially in the snow .

(Jan 17 06, 12:53)audi's handle like poop when pushed. the engine sits in front of the headlights bascially which means all that weight is up front which makes the car nose heavy.
if your using "sport mode" and want to have fun... look at the corner ahead, start braking a few yards (depends on the turn), downshift to the lower gear, take foot off accel pedel delicately, touch the apex of the corner (as much as you can on the road w/o going into the next lane or next lane if you want to, up to you on how dangerously you want to drive), after touching the apex of the turn, slowly get back on the accelerator and straighten out the car, upshift.
rinse and repeat on next turn. :D

oh really?... my A3 handles like its on rails... i drive it on windy mtn roads all the time and never feel any body roll, nor have i ever had it even remotely slide out from under me.
oh and one last thing, the engine is behind the lights.

I want pics Chris, and I want them now.
I've been seriously considering trading up to an A3

chic-car. better tone the front windows. =oD
CONS:
- Performance at higher elevations
- Engine noise when accelerating
- Difficult manual seat adjustment
- CincodeMayo0
Trey-chic if you ask me.
- lnu0
If anyone would ask me, I'd say that choosing between an A3 and a Jetta is just a matter of choosing looks over trunk space and vice versa. It's basically the same car.
- chz0
mine is exactly like this one Nic except i have the open sky system which makes the roof black (looks so much better imo) and i also have the sport package. its totally a drivers car, its like driving a large go kart... handles amazingly and the stock 200hp turbo moves the car plenty fast or you can get the new 3.2 which has around 250hp. feel free to drop me a line if you want any first hand feedback on the car, i'll send you some pics after i wash it... she's a mess right now.
lnu... comparing an A3 to a jetta is like comparing apples to oranges and its quite obvious you haven't done research on either vehicle.
please post some exmaples of how they are the same... just because VW owns Audi doesn't mean they are the same car.

Deutsch cars are the best imo.

VW Golf & Jetta and Audi A3 do share the same platform. As far as undercarriage and some engine models goes, they're the same.
Still, Audi engineers are able to squeeze more performance out of it. And better looks.

(Jan 18 06, 06:38)Well, in a way it does. VAG (VW) is probably the car manufacturer with the most variations on the same platform. The new Golf shares platform with the Passat, the Jetta, the A3, european models like Seat Altea, Toledo and Leon as well as Skoda Octavia.
They've got the same chassie, same suspension, electronics, steering, safety and features in general. Most of the engines are avaliable in all vehicles.
The biggest difference is in how the brand is marketed, and of course in exterior and inteior design and materials. There are also slight differences in how the engine and steering software.
The Jetta and A3 is not the same product, and they have different target groups but it's still more or less the same mechanics and therefor a very similar riding experience.
- CincodeMayo0
I agree. Two different cars.
Would you say the VW Touareg and the Porche Cayanne are the same car? They share the same undercarraige too, but perform and feel different.
I love my 06 Jetta, but if I didn't need VW to get me out of my 15 month left 03 Passat, I probably would've gone straight for the A3. But that said, the Jetta is great for it's value. It's a little slower than my Passat Turbo was, but it moves great and being that it's smaller it's pretty quick. It's got everything I could want besides a larger engine...moonroof, tiptronic and sport mode, leather, xenon lights, 6 cd in dash, Sirius radio, alloys, the works. I'm guessing with the A3, all that would probably get ya close to 26K and I'm leasing but my car is worth about 23K.
Not a bad deal. I can't really complain. They took me out of my lease with 15 months left, only put down a bit o cash and payments are up just slightly. I did good.

No, I wouldn't say that the Cayenne and Touareg are the same car, because they have completely different engines and suspension (although the doors are exactly the same ;)

I've been passenger in, and test driven both - and I can promise you that the driving experience is POLES apart! You can accelerate into and out of corners in the A3 and not feel a damn thing...the jetta just doesn;t have that kind of capability....

(Jan 18 06, 09:55)"word to that... like i said before, i have never felt any body roll or had the A3 slide out from under me pinning it on some tight mtn turns. i had an A4 2.0 as a loaner when the A3 went in for its first servicing and even that car was completely different drive... felt like driving a boat next to the A3.
