boooooo-yaaaaaaaaa.....nice one horton. Now, for those who don't know, I want you to explain to the class what trapping is.....in less than 1 sentence.
- horton0
but going back to the original question..
considering it was exported to tiff i wouldn't mind betting there was some colors fudged in the process.. did you export from a AI-CMYK color space to a CMYK tiff? anything but would mess with your values and end in muddy color.
open up the final tiff and give us a CMYK value on the blacks in question.. that should explain all. if you went from AI CMYK to PS RGB and back to CMYK, i bet your blacks will be a messy value, like (78,56,63,82) or something totally random.

not being funny or anything designnaked but you sound like a proper fucking twat old boy. one of those chumps in th eoffice that shouts over the answers even when you were having a private conversation with someone else, calm down eh old son, no need to be such a gobby twat know what I mean? I've nutted people for less sunshine, alright?

It could also be the tiff engine Illustrator uses......maybe. I know that when you save out a PDF from Illustrator you get different values then if you save out an EPS from Illustrator and run it through Distiller to get a PDF.
Anyway, listen to horton and also get ad spec sheets from each pub for any/all future ads.

scarabin and i recently had the process black and trap discussion:

Goucho...
Who are you to question me? Seriously now.....you don't know me and have never talked to me, know nothing about me but you assume by your post that you are on a higher plane of existance than me, that you are, somehow, better than me and therefore able to tell me who I am and what I am based on a few online posts. You're assuming a lot, aren't you?
BTW, if you had read anything then you would have noticed that I was 1) Trying to help, 2) Agreed with skt and others and 3) Praised horton for his mastery of quality advice and for redirecting the thread back on point.

ha.. just realized session hasn't replied once to this discussion.
wanker. i hate it when people do that.
don't ask people to spend their valuable time replying with professional advice and then f-off.

wow...sorry i havent been here for the discusion but I was pulled away from my desk. I never take these discusions for granted and i know that u guys have a wealth of information.
In regards to my process...I take my ph photo in ill and export to a tiff at 300dpi. How many of u get swap proofs for ur ads? Also in my ads as Horton discuessed my type is lossing its cripness...trapping?

I always get SWAP proofs for ads. A lot of pubs have a proofing system set up.....even if they are printing web (which most if not all pubs are).
Your type is losing its crispness because of dot gain and because you have, I'm guessing, darker colors around your type (read: multiple plates, more ink coverage, more dot gain). Trapping, yes, its a wonderful thing.
horton's top on this stuff.

thanks for ur help guys...after going thru the thread i see alot of changes on my part.
u guys rock....
- horton0
session - i'd still like to hear what the average CMYK values of your black were in the TIFF file.. that'd be the most valuable info.
- horton0
+ see my previous post regarding trapping and check this Adobe PDF:
http://www.adobe.com/products/ex…
trapping is an essential print skill.. especially for spot jobs. prepress trap software can't catch everything.
do they not teach this in design school anymore? weird.. i'm not THAT old!
and sorry i unloaded about no replies.. i too have to leave my desk sometimes :)

The first ad was 0,0,0,100 and the second was 11,9,9,97! The second ad looked better than the one that was %100 black...interesting!
