yep, 4 years at an art school, a degree in graphic design, a self-published book, and a pretty decent portfolio gets...
a part time job retouching portraits at a mall-chain digital photography studio.
but it's better than my previous work (unemployment). i guess this is what they call paying your dues.

you should try harder
- MrDinky0
listen to nick
try harder
you dont need a bfa to be designer

Nice portfolio. Also perdo the lion is awesome.

god bless you

ouch, It may be what you get in portland but there are design centers that you might have a better chance of getting what you want. try sf or nyc.
also the political ideas on your site might throw some people off. Not that it bothers me but politics and job seeking don't always mix

That's a kick in the pantaloons man. You have some nice work. Are you just print based or do have online work as well?
-also one of the others made a good point -- you might want to consider just a straigt portfolio work site; some of you blog comments etc. might turn people off, especially the corporate old-timers.

Yeah you need to move. Or do freelance. There are shitloads of jobs all over.

haha that's actually not my design portfolio. the site i have linked here is just my personal artwork. a lot of my design work is like that, but you're right, my portfolio generally doesn't include anything that includes my political or religious beliefs.
it is, i think, portland. i originally thought about NYC, i was offered a job at lowe, but when it comes down to it, i can live comfortably in portland for half of what it would take to live in a cramped harlem apt.
i was mainly commenting that mall photography jobs are lame as hell. but thank you all for the kind words. i know you don't need a degree to be a designer- i actually went to school for sequential art, but switched to gd just cause i lost interest in drawing after awhile.

my bfa is working great for me, and I'm in Portland too.
Maybe try working harder, or did someone already sat that?
- fugged0
seriously. the degree means shit when it comes down to it. i'm not saying school was a waste, but the degree isn't what gets you a job.

hey, i really dig your work!
but if i showed your site to my boss or my partner and said -lets hire this dude, they would say no way. no matter how good you are, you come across as pretty brash. no one wants to work with someone who is a livewire or is going to be high-maintenance or irritable. or a sociopath, which when you state the near future involves bad whisky and paint sorta comes to mind. and mentioning that you like confrontation, (which i happen to like as well) will not work either - i don't care what context you put it in - political or personal.i'm really not trying to be a dick, i would like you to succeed just as much as the next talented dude.
i wish you the best

Which mall are you at?
Lloyd Center?
Pioneer Place?Don't blame the city, someone's getting all the work out there.
- prodigalslacker0
arthur- clackamas town center, so it's a hike (i'm right downtown / pearl distrcit)
lambsy- i mentioned earlier but that's not the site i give off to employers. i have a .pdf portfolio that is very non-confrontational and shows off my more traditional skills as far as layout, typography, etc. i have a much different design portfolio which includes newspaper layout and magazine design, all the way through ads and whatnot. the site in my NT profile is just sort of my personal art site where i keep my blog.

If you're in the Pearl you mustn't be doing too bad.
You haven't linked your portfolio here yet. Can we see it?
- forcetwelve0
could be your attitude. your splash page is negative mate.
- kyl30
yeah arthur, these CCAC degrees are treating us both right.
- prodigalslacker0
sure. since i am still trying to develop the site, i usually just send a .pdf portfolio. it's here:
www.yournewaesthetic.com/files/C…...
it's usually bigger (11x17 pages) but i shrink it down for bandwidth and whatnot, but that's the reason for the odd size of it.
- prodigalslacker0
you'd think by now i'd know how to link a file on this thing. sorry about that.

i planned to get a bfa in fine arts. i have a diploma in fine arts.
im a graphic designer now, mostly corporate or events collaterals.
dont worry, im sure things will get better if you keep up what you're doing or maybe take other better chances.
