not to hijack(apologies in advance), but im a noob when it comes to wacoms...can u use'em effectively in illustrator? (i can't visualize editing nodes etc with a stylus..can u?) or is it soley a pshop thing?

i refuse to use a computer without a wacom tablet. been using one for years (i have the 4x5, perfect size). go for it.

cool i'l sit by and read the recommendations...

i'm with mitee..
haven't used a mouse for design work in over 7 years...i've got the new wacom, and its fantastic...i do a fair bit of illustrator work as well, and its perfect for that app, matter of fact, can't think of any design app it isn't perfect for...
its worth every penny..
besides, consider it an investment in your health..
i've seen more than my fair share of designers with carpal tunnel on their wrists (because of using a mouse + bad posture..
but i've never seen anyone have a problem from using a wacom tablet...
atleast i've never had a problem ..

cool, in addition to the original poster's inquiry, which are recommended quality wise? it is recommended to upgrade your stylus or are the ones they come with kosher?

original stylus is fine when you get an intuos they come with a nice rubberized grip, easier on the hand.. i have a 9x12 intuos2.
save money and get the intuos2 its perfectly fine

grabbing nodes in illustrator is a bitch... they need to increase the hit area
pixel work in photoshop is also a bitch...
but other than that it's great

grabbing nodes in illustrator is a beitch?
hmm that concerns me...is it easy to switch back to the mouse if need be...meaning will your old mouse still function while the stylus functions? or do u have to restart your computer because of driver issues?

I use an older 4x5 Wacom but it comes with a wireless mouse to use on the pad. You can switch back and forth no prob. Mouse gets you accurate guide lines and whatnot. I use Illustrator all the time, it's sweet.

love mine.
if you spend your day at a comp design, go for it.
the only thing that i don't like is that i draw lefthanded, but learnt to use a mouse righthanded, and therefore know all the shortcuts with my lefthand. a bit cumbersome doing shortcuts with a pen in hand.

had a Intuos2 and used it so much it literaly wore out.
I now have two Intuos3's. One at work and one at home. These are the best investment for a designer that's very hands on and likes to draw.
I've done logos, photo manip, comic book coloring, web design and personal artworks with it.

The sheer amount of hours my drunken friends have played with my Wacom writing and attempting to draw things was worth the purchase alone.

*bump for the other dude, and one more question from me:
ADVICE?
ok, i have one more concern before i plunge into getting one, i've been reading some reviews with the intuos 3, basically its swell, but the mouses with tablets tend to "suck" because of the limited range of motion.
here's my question.
How difficult is it to use my current mouse if i have the tablet hooked up? do i have to restart my computer each time? im thinking about when im browsing the web, PLUS more importantly, i use audio applications a lot like cubase and reason, and i doubt i'l be controlling that ish with a pen.
ADVICE?

i use a mix of mouse and tablet, extreme timesaver in design apps not to mention the expression you get from the touth sensitivity
a must have

I have an Intuos3 and it definitely is well worth every penny. It goes in places mice simply can't go. It *does* take some getting use to though. So don't be discouraged at first.
go grab one

it'll be th best investment you make... i have the intuous2 6x8 at home... and the intuos3 9x12 at work... i love the new stylus the 3's come with... it's a toss up as to which size is better... i like having the 9x12 but the 6x8 is just as comfortable. they both come with a mouse which is still in both of their respective boxes. i dunno about it helping carpal tunnel though... i just get pain near pinkie above the knuckle rather than behind my index finger with the wacom. you'll also start to type funny because you'll usually leave the stylus in your hand as you type. which eliminates the use of your index finger. at least i do anyway.
- aliendn0
when u say your mice are in their respective boxes, are u sayin u surf the net with the stylus?
- Clear0
it's actually really easy to surf with the tablet.
