HAHA, agentfour!!! and don't believe anyone that says they haven't done that before. Instant warmth. I usually soak in fish blood for about an hour before and then head out. It has something to do with being faster.

nor cal in the winter, you can bet i've pissed the suit. Extra half hour in the water at least.

sweet man! get into it. where you going?
don't expect to be able to do much on your first day, but skate/snow will help. just have fun being in the water.

i think being able to snowboard and skate will help fuck all. it will help a little once you can stand up, but until you can paddle and catch a wave, most are on a level playing field. Once your up, its all gravy.
Oh..Learn how to duckdive first and dont let go of your board!
Some idiot let go of his board a few weeks ago right in front of me. I copped it in the head and told the fuckwit to go in!

it's not easy at first. don't expect to much during the first couple days or weeks if you don't get much time to go consistently. you will have to get used to paddling, duckdiving and learning how to read thw waves breaking, etc... because it is what you'll spend about 75% of the time doing. you'll probably catch a few waves on the first day but feel like coughing up a lung.
surfing's the easy part but you have to stick with it to get any good and not tire out after an hour...
good luck Solar

are you kidding me agentfour? skateboarding and snowboarding helps HEAPS in terms of balance and fluidity....
- agentfour0
yeh thats what i meant by 'after you can stand up'. But the hardest thing about learning to surf(well the initial part at least) is paddling, catching a wave and actually getting to your feet. I dont think skating or snowboarding helps with that much at all. just in my opinion and experience.

thats true
being a good swimmer does tho

i learnt to surf in hawaii on a longboard and it was soooo easy! on those waves you have 5 minutes to work out how to stand up while you ride the wave in on a giant streamlined tabletop, i saw a 60 year old japanese man doing handstands on his board.
then i got home to perth with the blunt boards and short dumpy waves and i couldn't do sheeet. i got bashed in the head by my board, mocked by some 12 year old gromets who shouted "get off the waves ya farkin mole!" before they kicked sand in my face and laughed at the tears of shame coursing down my cheeks. *sigh*
The tragedy of powers lost.

i do all three, and surfing would probably be the hardest to get a hang of, ie. learning to stand up, and whatnot. but once you get a hang of it, it's easy to progress. inmy opinion.

best times off life, skipping school driving up the Fla coast to stinson beach surfing all day. now i live in wisconsin. but am planning a trip to costa rica for this winter, thinking about going here.

damn okaybro, that school looks sweet. I'm very tempted myself. Any others you're considering?

If you are serious about surfing soler then I would really reccommend some lessons - you'll get great tips to get you started.
Call around some of the surf shops about lessons - you'll be glad you did

For starters:
Start doing mad pushups and butterfly style lifts...like today + swim as mush as you can. Your arms will kill you by the time you make it into the lineup. The n you can't defend yourselves against the sufers who want to beat your ass for busting into their waves!

I've heard ventura is nice place to learn, the locals are very helpful...

i'd say take all of the advice in this thread (minus soking in fish blood like d5ive) and do one thing with it: TRY.
Find what works for you, but do not give up. EVER. you will be frustrated, pissed, and probably swallow a few gallons of seawater, but there are few feelings in the world like connecting with such an awesome natural phenomenon as a moving wall of water.
good luck.
enjoy the ride.
