(Jul 28 05, 10:10)--> haven't seen a knife in the lineup, but the key is to respect the locals, while at the same time asserting yourself in the lineup. i've surfed some of the most localized breaks in the country, and i've never once had a problem. it boils down to respect. give it, and you get it back (respect=waves). act like a jackass, and you get nothing except dirty looks, insults, and depending on the break, possibly a beatdown.

don't get too far up on the board: if you do, you'll nosedive into it and flip into oblivion.

some locals are harsh, but i'v never personally had a problem. a simple "whats up" as you paddle by them usually dissolves any tension.
