I rescued my pitbull Hank 13 years ago (Jan 8th 2001). I was in a car heading down the Brooklyn Queens Expressway here in NYC with two friends when some assholes opened up the side door on an astro van and threw the dog out on the road. The friend that was driving slammed violently on the brakes and I jumped out and scooped the dog up. He was bleeding very badly, super emaciated and was missing most of his fur from malnutrition.

We immediately took the dog to the vet near my apartment who explained he was in a bad way and there would be no shame in putting him down. He also stated that if I was willing to try to save the dog it wouldn't be cheap. I insisted he do his best and with that Hank was at the vet for four weeks.

After getting him home, and once Hank started getting his strength back, the challenge turned from recovery to training. The dog was a bit of a nightmare as he'd never been trained and ran around like he was on coke. I ended up devoting every waking moment I wasn't at work to break him of any bad habits and and make sure he wouldn't be an asshole of a dog.

Flash forward to 2014. Hank has been the sweetest dog I've ever had. He's been my best friend, partner in crime and slice of sanity when things get difficult. I can go on forever about how much he's enriched my life. He's honestly never been nasty or violent in any way towards anyone. Keep in mind, this is a dog that was starved, beaten and thrown out on a highway. If this had been a person, they'd probably be in therapy the rest of their life.

Sorry for the long story. I just believe my dog, like every other pitbull in a loving environment, is proof that these are not animals that should be discriminated against. On the other hand, there are some people out there who should not be allowed to own animals, period!

My wife tortures him on his bday
