I was in the Cattedrale di Pisa, next to the famous leaning tower, earlier this year and I was absolutely and utterly taken by a piece - a small and apparently inconsequential piece as I can't find the fucker on the internet to keep a photo. It was an image of christ described in gold leaf, and the rays on the halo were just.. sublime.I literally stared at this thing for ten minutes.

This was a small piece, off in a corner in a ridiculously-extravagant edifice, the likes of which I cannot even begin to imagine how it was all put together, and all I could think was "This is the absolute antithesis of what Christ wanted".

All that concentration of money and power, over so many centuries, fucking over all the people that Christ most wanted to help.

As much as I was bewitched by that beautiful, golden representation of Jesus, I knew that it was inherently disgusting.

    • Yeah I agree, religion is a pretty despicable thing. Just sayin they paid for a lot of nice art and architecture. Chill.monospaced
    • Please don’t interpret what I’m saying as defending religion. That’s really not my thing, at all.monospaced

The concept of forgiveness and absolution is clever.

It enables a Christian to do “bad” things but still judge others for doing the very same things.

    Empowering hypocrites since 4000 BC!

    • more like 300AD, no?Nairn
    • The hypocrisy you describe goes against actual xtian principles (making them 'false xtians')—so you don't really have a point other than they're hypocrites. :)PonyBoy

    • those who determine the gravity of the given crime never abuse the information they have obtained, neither when they determine the number of repetitionssted

    ^
I've spent a fair amount of time in Italy these last few years, and have seen the grandest of edifices put up in Christ's name - as they have been in my own and many other country's too, obviously - but the sheer opulence of the ones in Italy, at the height of the respective powers that comprised it? It's crazy-ridiculous.

And against everything Christ himself taught.

It's so crazy to me how the entiriety of Christ's teaching has been so utterly mangled and abused to exact power, might and capital in the hands and roots that grew the sheer perversion that is the catholic, and most every other, church.

But here we are, and it's entirely normalised.

    • All the symbols ( † ), sainthoods and relics etc go completely against Christ's actual teachings too... 'perversion' is too kind a wordPonyBoy
    • When I lived there I spent a lot of time in their churchesGnash
