this would just look so much better with a strong grid and more space

I hear a lot about the grid, anyone know of any good books/resources on it?

Just hold one of those wire cooling trays (most people use for cooling cookies) up to your monitor, line everything up...presto!

erm... maybe it just me but its one of those sites that i'd just close the window on immediately.. obviously i'm not the target audience but anything that says it's 'easy as 1-2-3' with a pic of a twat stood next to i tis fucked from the start imo, i know thats not a design thing and i dont know what your clients telling you but, erm ,yeah, thats me two cents...

The colors in the tabs look like playschool, whereas teh red in the bars on teh bottom look snice. I would use secondary and tertiary colors instead of bright ones.

The text on the left column and right colums should line up. Looks like they are offset vertically by a few pixles. That definitely doesn't help the 'grid' issue.
I agree about there being too many colors randomly used and no real focal point. I'd say desurate everything and build colors slowly... and pick one thing to focus on.

Scanlines? SCANLINES?! That's the 7th circle of Designer Hell, right along with people who use lensflares and binary.

I dont have any space to work with....they asked me to fix the width exactly to these dimensions.... the titles to the sections are their ideas.... if I had space a grid might work....this is set up in a grid in terms of it being sized with equal boxes....the main image is the same size as the text introducing what Rapid funds is... and the news is the same size as the part with the icons....
they are now taking out search and I am making the nav uniform gray and the rollovers will be what you now see....
- jevad0
ken dude
try some lighter shades of black...erm ie grey...to differentiate the boxy elements....#333333 and #666666

yeah if you follow a nice grid then your layout would be a lot better. The font size for the headers are really big.

Aren't those the 'Apprentice' contestants ?

well, i'm going to be honest. brutal even. so take it or leave it:
the colors in the nav have got to go, or pick something much less rgbcmyk
(ie. monochromatic maybe)headline fonts are much too big.
the bold italic callouts need to be finessed, smaller and maybe a different non-italicized font.
the stock image is beyond stock/cliche.
the white type on black def. distracts from the main content.
the red lines with gradient need to be finessed...or removed
the icons are too big.
like i said, brutal but honest. this has taken me a while to type so it may have been said already.
