So like after reading an article about it in Maxim, I went and got a free credit report online. I found out i have a Sears card thta was opened a month before i was born in 1980 that now has a credit line of 11,000. anyway i have 1 negative score.
is this okay? somewhat bad? whats anyones experience on a negative score?

it was open before you were born?
I would go ahead and get that fixed.
Bad credit is bad for you and will hurt you.

das true

the card has no balance.
i think it was opened by my parents, to build credit . ahhh no wonder i always get the "when we first got to the US we couldnt buy a tv because we had no credit".
is a -1 bad considering I have no debt anymore?
- version30
-1? you should have a triple digit score like 850 thats perfect credit

my credit is shot- completely - I am thinking bankruptcy is my only way out now.

isn't bankruptcy like the ultimate bad credit?

One strike against you isnt too bad, though i would get it taken care of asap.
most good credit reports should inform you as to what percentile you are, in relation to the us population. they will also tell you how companies issuing credit see you: high risk, low risk.
i think one negative mark on your report would still be considered a low risk.
when you go to buy a home or car, they will look at your FICO score. That is the big number that really counts. Monitor that number at least 3X a year. Higher the number (up to 850) the better off you are. Do everything you can to keep that number high.
You'll regret it otherwise.

cool thanks. the report i got was from http://www.annualcreditreport.co… . didnt really say what percentile i was in, maybe because it was free.

which agency did you choose on that website? all three, or just one?
- obey460
Just one, Equifax

If there's something on there from before you were born, don't worry about filing for bankruptcy- that's only if you can't pay the bills you currently owe.
But you can file a thing saying there's something false on your credit report. I don't think your parents could have put that on there because you didn't have a social security number before you were born, so there would be no way for them to take out a credit card on you.
It's either a mistake (which happens a lot more than people think) or a case of fraud.
Either way- you can get it removed and your credit score will improve.

when i was trying to rent my apartment, they did a credit check and it came up that i had a civil criminal charge and 10k debt.
i was like... wow!! it's not me!
so they did a credit check again with the different agency and it came out clean. but it's kinda scary that someone with the same name is total fucked up.
