I lived in Acapulco for about a year in my early years. So I wouldnt know much about it know. The only thing that i can recomend is to stay in the hotel Princess, which it is near the aiport. and the section it is located is called "Punta Diamante" (diamond point) Also that is the best place for swiming and laying out to the sun since that section is still considered "virgin" from turists, or at least from population.
YOu want to go to "La Quebrada" where you can see guys diving into the ocean from the side of a mountain from about 100 feet or more off the ground.
Acapulco is not that big so as soon as you arrive to "downtown" you wont need like a rental car, you can visit the whole beach by foot.

yeah, I was born and Raised in Mexico city(17 yrs), so my first advice is. DO NOT GO ALONE!!! specially if you have never been there before.
Always walk as you know where you are going, even if you dont, that is the first sign of a pray for any robber in Mexico city. Do not take any taxi cab on the side of the street. Always make sure you take one from the airport and that they have License plates. them all have Ids in the front of the taxi cab so try to memorize name or ID # for security purposes. If they dont have ID get off the taxi cab imediately.
If you rent a car, always have your doors locked and never leave valuables in sight. There is a common thing that robbers do in some stop lights. If they see a valuable in your car, they use a spark plug to shatter your windows and steal your stuff. they will run against the traffic if it is heavy so if you try to chaise them, forget it!
If you ride the subway or any kind of transportation do not wear earings/watches/rings. I know some might think it is too much but rather be safe than sorry.
:)
Other than that Enjoy your stay! specially in "La Zona Rosa" at night and downtown during the day, next to Placio Municipal you will find some cool ruins right in the middle of the city.

Ok, so just like Oakland, Nah JK : ),
cool thanks for the advice, going with my wife so I won't be alone. I've only been to baja(nice and mellow) before so its quite different on the mainland I would imagine. We'll defiantly watch our backs and I was planning on traveling light.
Thanks again!

Hey fusionpixel - nice tips - I am heading to Mexico in 8 weeks, then travelling through Central America and South America. If you have any more words of wisdom speak out! I need all the info I can get right now on the area.....
- fusionpixel0
Hey RIZ,
what part of Mexico are you heading to? Is it mexico city?
- RIZ0
I first fly to Cab San Lucas from LA, then I am heading to Mexico City, and from there go to The Yucatan Peninsula and up to Cancun.
From there head South through Belize and down through the rest of Central America. Have you travelled around these places? Any tips for Mexico would be cool, as i don't have much info on it yet - in particular the Yucatan area.
cheers - I can't wait!

Riz, Going to peru? Lots of great stuff to see there.
- RIZ0
Yeah I am DEFINITELY going to Peru, can't wait to hike the Inca Trail - have you been there?
- fusionpixel0
I havent been to Cabo San Lucas, although my parents say it is a beautiful place, and for the pictures I have seen it really looks like it. They say it is like a little city next to the beach and everyone is really corteous.
Mexico city - well I dont have much more to say than to remember that you will be in the middle of 25,000,000 other people (the biggest city in the world) where cops dont care to much for your security (althoght they say they do) and you can buy your way out of almost anything (sad but true).
Do go to bars or clubs at night unless you know who you are going with and you trust your companions.
I havent been to cancun. But i have couple of frieds whose their parents are Managers from Hotels there. You dont use Pesos in Cancun, dollars only so you should not have problems with the money exchange.
Oh that is another good subject (Money Exchange - this is for Mexico city only). I dont know where you are going to exchange your money from US Dollars to Pesos(Mexican Currency) But I would suggest to do it here in the USA. dont expect just to walk down to the bank and come out counting all the pesos you got with few hundred dollars. they might be gone from your hand sooner than you think.
Never count your money in public.
Carry the minimum un your wallet
Dont carry Credit cards, just an ID and cash.
if you need your back pack to walk around the city try to carry it on your front, will avoid the desire to take it away from you.
keep your cash in your front pockets.
Now, all the above apply if you are in Mexico city. IM sure Cancun is cool as well as Cabo San lucas.
Anyways. gl and I hope you have fun!

Oh yeah, it was awesome, did the inca trail, cusco, nasca lines, lima, amazon, ayawaska(the root), much more. We spent 25 day just in peru. great country!
- RIZ0
Hey fusionpixel - thanks heaps for that info, I can see i will have to have my wits about me when I head to Mexico City.
kld - what would be a good route to attack the sites of peru?
- kld0
A friend just returned from ecuador and they have some gadget down there that can scan your atm card from a distance and they create a clone card. His bank account was drained within several days.
Travellers checks maybe?
- kld0
Riz - You're probably already down with the lonely planet guide books but I would spend some time reading them before you go and find the things youre interested in and try to map a route that way.
basically I went:
lima
nasca
arequipa
lake titicaca
cusco
inca trail
machu pichu
cusco
iquitos
lima
- RIZ0
cool thanks kld -shit, I'll be careful with my card - that is crazy!
