Does anyone know if there is anything equivalent to the PC defragmentor for the Mac? I got a new powerbook a few months ago... only use it for IM, web browsing and maybe a little bit of Photoshop... and just now it is giving me hell. Just wondering if this thing needs maintenance I run on it.

Start up from the OS cd and run the disk utility... repair permissions and drive check
- EvilGenius0
?? Clean up helped my G5 but not sure its what ur after.

I use this to keep my Macs running like formula 1 race cars: http://www.mkd.cc/sox

wow davey_g, it's only $12?!
anyone else around here use this?
- scoops0
i've used it... i dont know that i saw any real performance boosts, but it didn't hurt anything.

Norton System works.. is the only defrag tool that I've had any luck with
- sparker0
just run fsck. it's unix, people.
boot single-user mode, run /sbin/fsck at the cl.

Doesn't fsck wipe your drive?
- sparker0
no. fsck is the linux/unix file system check and fix utility.
[side note rant]
it amazes me that people a) don't know how to actually use their computers, and b) continually pay for software when they have the appropriate tools for the job already installed.

If/when your transmission goes in your car I assume you know how to, and will fix that too?!?Didn't think so. Hypocritical for you to say that when you probably don't know 60% of the workings of your car.

you cant defrag osx. i was going to try it with norton, and i found that it will fuck it all up. an artical o read said that the hd's nowadays are so big and processors are so fast there is really no need to defrag osx..
dont know if that helps.
- sparker0
well, normally i would agree, although the analogy doesn't really compare...apples and oranges...
there are garages that will fix your car when it breaks down...taking a computer to a shop for a simple fsck is not only a waste of time and money...but most will just tell you have to do it yourself.
it doesn't take but 5 minutes to rtfm for a computer.
[side note 2]
but, in this case, my father was a manager at a garage for 20 years...so, yes actually i do know the workings of my truck.and, when i bought my street bike a few years back, i took a class from the local dealer on basic maintenance and up-keep incase i broke down in the middle of know where.
- BonSeff0
so can you defrag the fucker or not?
- sparker0
defrag is a windows concept. it doesn't really translate over to linux or unix; in this case mac.
but, fsck is a file system maintenace utility.
unix and linux don't require a "defrag" like a windows box does...but file systems can become corrupted or worse.
in the case of system performance issues, sometimes a simple fsck is all it takes.
it checks and [optionally] fixes the file system structure.
and norton is a horrible program. everytime i've seen it used it has caused more damage then it was supposed to fix.

man page for fsck
http://www.hmug.org/man/8/fsck.h…
- k0na_an0k0
so how EXACTLY do you fsck?
which looks like fucks chick btw. which aint that bad of an idea.
- BonSeff0
then how come you could defrag an os9 machine?
- sparker0
because os9 wasn't based off unix.
new system under the hood entirely.
at boot, hold control-s or whatever your mac keys are...this boots into 'single-user' mode.
once the screen stops scrolling and you get to the command line, simply execute the command...
/sbin/fsck [options]
you may need to know your device node...in linux this could be
$ fsck /dev/hda1
or something like that...i'm not sure about mac device nodes
- BonSeff0
cool, thanks for the tip chief
