First off, i am a huge Carson fan . I understand people not liking his work but DC has caused 'arguments' and 'debates' for more the 15 years now. Name another designer who has caused a bigger and longer ruckus?!?

anyways, you can say whatever about carson, good or bad, but he for sure made a big mark on graphic design. and if he made it because he sucked at it than that my dear is in my book good as well.
besides 99,9% of the designers will never ever be on that level.
fyi i happen to do like his work. still.

I think that he had a big influence on giving a new look at designs and definitely inspired designers to try a different route, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that he changed everything.
but I also think is that people like Carson, without education and doing design helped discredit this profession to a point where we are now. Their influence is definitely not to be neglected but in all the hype, they gave everyone ideas that they can do design without any education. That is why design profession is not taken very seriously today. I refuse to listen or take seriously anyone who doesn't have real education in the field.
You will see very creative lawyers bending laws and things like that, but none of them had 1 class in law and then started their practice. A very important thing to think about.

how seriously do you want design to be taken? it's not brain surgery.
i believe that a thorough knowledge of design theory and history are pretty important, but if someone's a kick ass artist, they're a kick ass artist.
some folks act as if folks should be board certified with a doctorate to slap together flyers or book covers.

Apparently your education has not taught you about the great names in our industry that were self-taught as well.
