I think its been thoughted out. I don't think the people at Lippincott Mercer would arrive at the meeting at the BNY and say : "Ok, this is your logo, we don't really know what we are going to do when its in grayscale or really small, but we will think of that later."
It will only need to be controlled correctly like Mr. Spaeth said :
" Implementation design will be all-important; in Connie Birdsall's hands, it will be elegant"

haha my point exactly...how do you adapt the logo they are going to use later down the road? it doesnt have much flexibility imo...you go with the color scheme and it becomes the national bank for gays....you go with the shape and it turns into a cliche logo with albeit a lot more punch.
I LOVE the type style so hopefully they can carry that in the future but the mark to me does nothing but hurt.
I'm sure they have a lot more thought into this than I am seeing and I'm sure they've put this to the test in all circumstances. I just see it as a problem down the road, I think it probably looks amazing in print and in larger format but I must admit I would have never gone down this road simply on scalability and flexibility issues alone. Cheers!!

hey, did anyone else just realize that we're actually having an intelligent discussion about design?
...this is cool.
- iDp0
agreed!!

haha, an intelligent discussion about design -- on the weekend.
- janne0
hahahahaha!
(= my most intelligent contribution for the day)

if you take away the box... the logo stands very nice on its own with Just the Type face.
Maybe the gray scale will be just the type face?
- janne0
we should come up with solutions ourselves.
a redesign contest or something. just to see..and for a laugh.
but, alas, it's weekend and i am lazy.
