so what should I get?

i've got a d100 and love it but i must say, after using a mamiya afd w/ a leaf digi back, i'm sold. as soon as these things come down a little in price i'll be making the purchase.

If you already have a slr with lenses, you should probably stick with the system. If you are a system virgin, then..
Nikon D70 - 6MP, very fast and accurate AF, plastic covered body (metal frame), good price.
Canon20D - 8MP, magnesium body, very fast shooting and AF, very good for night shots (almost noiseless ISO1600) costs about 150% of Nikon's price. Some people report AF accuracy problems but I can't tell.
Pentax *istDS - 6MP, SD cards (no CF support), smallest body (metal frame, plastic covered), biggest viewfinder in the class, support for AA batteries and tons of legacy lenses including old Karl Zeiss Jena ones your parents keep boxed in the attic. I guess it'd be the best choice if you want to experiment with photography (manual shots and stuff). Should also be the best for street photography, especially when paired with the new pancake lens.

I Haven't touched the new pentax camera yet though, they still haven't hit the stores here.
All 3 described cameras have excellent image quality.Or.. go for a Canon 1DS MK II if you have $ to spend ;)

Now I am even more fucking confused!!!
Whats teh deal with that pentax pancake lens - my japanese is rusty!
I just want a camera that is going to take excellent crisp and tru-colour photography in bright sunlight and at night.
Oh and sharp B&W shots too....
Also want to get into photographing a lot of back country snowboarding and kickers this season

both Canon and Nikon are awesome... I would just pick them up and see which one has the buttoms where you want them. I prefer the Canon setup, but I've been using canons for work for a good while.

Is there much in it between 6MP and 8MP?
- jakeyj0
how much does the 20d run? is USD
- meok0
Jevad, there is no quality difference between a 6MP and a 8MP print.
"The real question is how many current digital SLR owners will see real value upgrading to the EOS 20D. It's certainly a better camera than the 10D (faster, better AF, more features) however when you see side-by-side image comparisons it becomes clear that the increase from six to eight megapixels doesn't make a very large difference to resolution and for the majority wouldn't add any more value to their photographs."

thanks
that hassleblad looks fucking awesome

Pancake lens is the thinniest AF lens available(well, soon they say). It's a standard lens, meaning it has fixed focal length, no zooming.
Snowboarding, you say..
Pentax has the slowest AF from the bunch (slightly), which might be bad for sports. On the other hand, it's pocket-size and does not blow out skies thanks to its wide tonal range:
I think with a Canon 10D you'd have either a white sky or a blue sky and everything else black. Not sure about how 20D would handle this.
Remember that a camera body is just the beginning. Lenses are a headache and an expensive addiction. Once you try a Canon L (pro) lens, you're lost. They're fast, quiet, outstanding quality, environmentaly sealed and all..
As for kit lenses, Nikon 18-70 seems a good choice.
Canon's 18-55 is quite poor quality, and 17-85 IS is supposed to be terrible for its high price. Remember that a 'poor quality' dslr lens is much better than any compact camera's.
Just go to the store and decide which one fits you hands better, which shutter sounds more appealing to your ear. The most important thing is that you feel the camera is designed for you. You can take great pictures with any of those cams.

good info, shaft
are you getting the pentax?
- shaft0
I need to get it in my hands first. I'm a bit worried about what they say about AF speed. But then, _anything_ will focus faster than my old D30 :)
US Nikon buyers, take a look at this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/…

when you decide, please let us know-- thanks!

I'm not an expert, just digging for information like you do. I think you can't go wrong with any of the three. Be careful when choosing lenses, but trying these, changing, selling on ebay, borrowing and blablaing on forums is part of the fun :)
Probably a good idea would be toget a kit lens, learn if you like it, then play with other models as you learn what you want from it.

I know I want a good fish-eye, panoramic and tele-photo lens....
- non0
NIKON.
I have a canon a80 and I want to get rid of it to buy the Nikon Coolpix 5200.
Crazy fun little camera!

Wow this is a great thread. I came on here to get this very advice.. I'm 90% sure i'm going to get a Canon EOS 20D.
DP Review -> http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/…
rates it highlyCNET ranks it highest in its class -> http://reviews.cnet.com/Digital_…
It's going to be my first SLR so I'm pretty hyped. Before this I had a SONY DSC F717.
From what you've all said here there isn't really much difference apart apart from personal preference.
Any extra advice before I make the dive.. the expensive dive.

Get it, its a great cam.
