Wow this is a great thread. I came on here to get this very advice.. I'm 90% sure i'm going to get a Canon EOS 20D.

It's going to be my first SLR so I'm pretty hyped. Before this I had a SONY DSC F717.
From what you've all said here there isn't really much difference apart apart from personal preference.
Any extra advice before I make the dive.. the expensive dive.
