After 5 years of service, they decided that because of the lack of work (caused by poor management decisions) they didn't need me.
Merry Christmas ... oh, and thank god the job market in Toronto is booming!! yay!!
how do you take your coffee ?

biggest topic jump post ever!

Thanks man... I appreciate it.

"Nice timing. "

- gruntt0
and a happy new year.
best of luck. maybe this is a good thing...?

get drunk.
holidaze.
chill.
rage back in the new year and onto something bigger and better.
fuck 'em.
i'd say good luck, but that's not really what you need.
here's to tenacity.

Few weeks. not enough to pay rent/food though ... I wouldn't be concerned, if I knew there was a lot of design work out there.
I don't think even studios will be hiring until way past xmas time, when things pick up again.
I'm worried, because sometimes financial stress can have a great impact on the creative ... and right now, my mind is shit.
- paraselene0
check the new thread. just fer you.
- dfd0
My folio just doesn't stand up for hardcore flash work ... I usually get my associates to do that. I'm more print and creative direction ... or, that's what I have been for the past while, even on freelance jobs.
Might as well tune up those coding skills now, or else dfd will be out of a job for a while.
- jpea0
just gotta go and bug the shit out of the studios and tell 'em to hire you! (or, hit the ground running and find clients... tough though with no money pillow to fall on)
best of luck though
last year i had a couple projects roll in at the end of the year because the companies wanted to be billed before the year ran out so they could use their budget surplus.
- pascii0
good luck for the quest. i found something after 3 mths. prepress. well... cheer up
- dfd0
Unfortunetly, that's probably where I'll end up.
It's a shame when companies don't use their resources effectively. As a result, I'm out of a job. Oh well ... I'm very optimistic, and I always turn negatives into positives.
Things will work themselves out in the end.
Right now I'm just picking myself back up. The support here, is helping a lot though.
Thanks guys.

dfd. keep your head up. the very same thing happened to me a few years ago, AND i had just purchased a new house 2 months before.
i took a look at your site and you have some killer skills. don't sweat it.
if it means anything i don't bookmark too many sites, hardly any actually, i bookmarked yours. sweet work and a refreshing change of pace for a site.
- Blofeldt0
Yarrrr. You don't need 'em matey. Just had a butchers at your website, some ace stuff on there. Get out there and give 'em HELL!
- dfd0
lol ... shit guys, this means a lot. i'm definitely looking forward for new oppertunities.
things could be worst, i don't have a wife or kids or a morgage ... nor do i have cancer or any serious health issues.
i just love design so much, and not being able to do it anymore in a great environment, without financial stress is going to be a big change.
but i'll adjust ... i'm a trooper
thanks guys.

Hang in there dfd, you'll be fine dude.
Your site is clean and simple to use and will serve you well should you decide to freelance. The timing is good as the industry seems to be picking up some good momentum.
Fair play for the 'shout-out' to the one and only Mr Morris on your site. He used to live near me (before I was born obviously!). I liked his style. Even wrote my dissertation on his letterpress.
The amount he did in one lifetime is crazy. Total workaholic.
Good luck!
London, England.

don't let em grind u down - even a stupid job gives u the opportunity to save some money and search from a safe base. so do i here :) and your website contains a load of good work
- dfd0
Thanks for the great comments everyone ... I am, however, in the process of changing my website ... all done in PHP, very very simple. more like a "gallery" than a site with a certain concept applied to it.
think:
http://www.apracticeforeverydayl…the current design is definitely taking away from the work. i think i'm working on something good. gimme a week.

toronto offers the best service for people who lost their jobs.
When i was working in toronto a few years back, my project manager was let go due to cut backs and lack of work coming in. He applied for E.I just to help him out to pay for rent and food while he look for work. And it didnt take him long to find work.
Things happen for a reason..u have bigger fishes to fry my friend.

dfd...a short month ago I was on here posting about my own demise at a job I loved. But seriously now that I'm out...already its the best thing thats ever happened. Looking back I realized that they made me second guess everything I did and in turn I wasn't producing the 'good' work. You have a good skill set and shouldn't have too much trouble finding a job.
Try to hit up agencies and tell them that you would like to freelance with them, get their overflow. That way you can get used to each agency and see if there is one that you would like to work with fulltime. Thats what I did and an agency out here wanted to hire me fulltime...I asked them if they would let me freelance for them for a while to see if I like working with them and they're cramming work down my throat at good prices. I know its a huge shock when you get fired but give it a couple days to sink in and I think you will be much happier either on your own or at a new place with new challengees. Youve got some good skills, stick to your guns and good things will happen.
