fireworks much easier to organise layouts and adjust positions of objects and so on.. . in my opinion.. and the slicing is way better than in photoshop.. but for certain types of graphics involving photography I think you have to use photoshop for all the layer effects and blending and so on.. fireworks has this also.. but not quite so detailed..

Fireworks is the best for slicing stuff up...especially if you use Dreamweaver. I use proxy images in Fireworks, slice them up, export to DW, then sub in my hand optimized stuff from Photoshop. Photoshop still rules for image manipulation. Plus, it is solid as heck.

pocho & nemo summed it up :)

symbols in fireworks is fucking great too... for laying out stuff.. i hate the type engine though.

true nick.... the type engine gets very processor intensive if you are typing long texts for mockups..

I've always been a big fan of laying everything out in illy..messing with the bitmaps in photoshop and then bringing them all together into flash. However last week I hung out with the guy who taught me design and he built this really nice layout in Fireworks. So I started using it again for my new site and I have to say that it is a really nice program for laying things out. Much better imo than Illustrator.
I think the reason why I like it is that I am such a visual person, and its much easier to see what the page is going to look like when you are using fireworks. Exporting to flash from Fireworks cuts out all those annoying errors that Illy and Flash have.
Isn't Image Ready just for doing funny animated gifs?

Yeh, I'm the same as a few people here, layout in fireworks, export to dreamweaver. however i often mock up my concepts in PS as it feels like I have more control there. Tried to get into ImageReady, but the latest version feels like a knockoff of fireworks (ironic considering Adobe once sued macromedia over fireworks).

Fireworks is the only tool worth using if you want to lay out a website due to the simple fact that everything you add to a layout remains an individual, fully editable object. Every aspect of every component of a design can be made pixel perfect and remains simple to edit in case you change your mind half way through.
I wouldn't touch it for photo manipulation though. It's just not good at it in the way PS is.
The type rendering isn't great at small sizes and the way the colour swatches work is quite crap, but as a WEB layout tool, Fireworks is simply quicker and better suited for the job than anything else including PS. I use them both and Photoshop just seems so unnecessarily arcane and long-winded when you want to do simple things as quickly as Fireworks.
Do your image manipulation in PS, import it into Fireworks and marvel at how simple everything seems.

it works well with freehand and it exports jpgs and gifs better
