Living and Working in Spain

Hey all you Spanish NT'ers out there. I am taking my very first trip to Spain tomorrow, for vacation. I am going to be in Madrid primarily, visiting friends who I have met through my Mom(who used to live there)

I was thinking it would be awesome to live there. I know I have to first see how it goes when I visit, but I always thought it would be cool to live in a Spanish speaking country, and I am very interested in improving my Spanish.

How difficult is it for an American to work and live over there. I have one possibility, the company I work for in San Francisco, Grey Advertising, has offices in Madrid. So I might be able to get set up with them.

Any thoughts, and insight is much appreciated! Wish me luck on my first trip to Spain!

    Muchas Gracias!

I had a similar question posted on here a few months back. Didn't get much feedback. I share the same interest in working in Europe, and I have a limited spanish background, so Spain is on my list.
It would definitly be a lifestyle change, and that is always difficult once the charm of a beautiful foriegn country wears off. I have more technical questions of cost of living / wages / work permit? / design community...ect.

Man, I'd give anything to live in Seville (that's Seh-vee-ya)

    Hey thompson,

I know what you mean about the cultural lifestyle change. I am worried about that too. One appealing thing for me is that I will have friends in Madrid, which would make living there much easier, as opposed to being alone in a new place.

But I figure if I ever want to do this, now is the time, since I am still single and unattached here in San Francisco. Plus, if it doesn't workout, I can always return here.

    Thanks for your insight.

See, that is the kind of stuff that inspires me. Of course, I don't think I would be that brave to just pick up and go. I would probably need a plan first. I think I will have a much better idea after my trip.

    If it helps...
I did what you guys are trying to do, but from Argentina to the US. I actually came here without knowing anybody, I did study english though. But I wanted to practice, I was undecided at first between here or australia, opposite of you I wanted to improve my english. I got an intership through college, and from there a job in a agency, now I work solo, and a few months ago got my EU dual citizenship, and Im thinking next moving over there, but this time I want my girl to come with me :)
Is deffenetly something I reccomend to anyone, if you can't affor to live there, at least travel alone sometime, its kinda weird at the begginning but eventually you meet people, make friends, and its huge change, so be ready!

    good luck!

I just got back from spending 2 weeks in Spain - Barcelona, Madrid and a shit-hole called Benidorm and was very unimpressed. The architecture was great in Barcelona and Madrid and they definitely have a happening nightlife/social life but I just found a lot of people rude. There's a strange sense of arrogance and I couldn't really understand why? I was expecting this in Paris and maybe Germany, but it couldn't have been more opposite.

For me the whole lifestyle was just not my steez, a little too easy-going I suppose.

I too, am currently trying to relocate to the EU, either Amsterdam or the UK which I definitely liked much more than Spain. Anyhow, to each is own, I know tons of people that have been to Spain and love it, and never felt any of the vibes I was feelin'.

I made the move from england 4 years ago and live/work in Madrid. Sounds like you've got a good start with the studio where you work having an office in Madrid, a transfer would be the best thing, then you could look around once you're here and move if you want to. Let me know anything else you need to know... Oh, it's pissing down with rain at the moment so bring an umbrella!.
