thx, snuggles. the mermaid will be separate. regardless. it's part of the usage-concept..
they used to have the mermaid on the posters (photographed) but (waaay) too many people found it to become a bit of a boring idea seeing a mermaid photographed every year.
but the mermaid has been part of the festival, so i will incorporate it as an 'icon' (or mascotte if you will..) so that it will be instantly recognized and this will make room for more abstract or slightly deviating (fron the theme) photography.
the current logotype is film by the sea on top of each other but they use it really small as well (as a logo) which makes it totally illegible...
also on the poster they use a different type treatment for film by the sea again..
all in all it is quite messy now, but the festival is growing by the year.. one of the largest in my country now.

so....any suggestions on the 'by the' issue? i am clueless..
and don't feel like spacing it up more or making it wider...
hmmmmm..
- tough-actin0
the "f" illustrates the idea of sea
making the word sea < is too literal> all undulating
makes the logo as a whole look too disjointed
unify,simplify
fuck i sound like a design teach
bleeeeach
sorry really getting into it
- DutchBoy0
"the "f" illustrates the idea of sea
making the word sea "you think so??
hmm..
i welcome all critiques..
but yeah.. 'Sea' might be making you seasick on second thought.
keep it coming! i will modify, edit and what not....

Just use the dripping deer head again, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! j/k

have you played with something more characteristic of the wordmark, like Avant garde or something very geometrically rounded for "by the"....also have you tried dropping "Sea" below "Film" possibly placing "by the" between the two prominent forms....perhsp the "F" could drop down far enough to become part of the "S"........and "by the" could placed in a knockout fashion into something a bit more "nautical" as someone put it...perhaps in a subtle wave form but knocked throught to white to create some strata between teh forms and make it more noticeable and the mark read better .... just some thoughts
- DutchBoy0
right on, versa.
you got me, i will put them on top of each other as one of the options for the next round of crits!
thx!
- tough-actin0
"perhsp the "F" could drop down far enough to become part of the "S"........"
could be on to something worth a try
- mr_snuggles0
It's better but I think the avant garde isn't a great choice. It's too similar to the lettering used in Film and Sea, therefore highlighting the weakness of the letter forms. Again, without showing the relationship between the type and image it's hard to tell what will be best, ya know what I mean...
- DutchBoy0
i hear ya, snuggles.
but i am working real hard on the mermaid... but first and foremost that has to be fitting the logotype anyway, not vice versa.
here's another:
i tried to smuggle the 'e' in the 'by the'.. also i made it more look like AvantGarde.
it fits more now. still not perfect...
aaaah deadline!
crits welcome folks!! :D

Much better, try making the "m" in film slightly wider, adjust the descending hook in the "F" to something closer to either the top of the "F" or similar to the "S" obviously not as wide as the "S" but the hook just seems a little too small.
I'm going to shut up now. Good work though, I know I personally like this much more! :)
- DutchBoy0
"I'm going to shut up now. "
Please don't!
i need extra eyes on this.
these suggestions are actually very helpful, snuggles.
- tough-actin0
lookin great dutchy!!!
the "e" still looks like it can be straightened out
and maybe you can shave off the 2 ends of the "S" and make it parallel with cap and base lines
love that "a"
the stem of that "m" is bugging me a bit
and the letters of "sea" either overlap or give them some space in between
2 cents
- lara0
doesn't look bad.
what says film though.
maybe too complicated.don't get it's relevance.
Sorry
- DutchBoy0
modified tail of F and made M somewhat wider..
I am just thinking maybe i should make the tail of the F so that it connects to the middle line? hmm..
- tough-actin:
"ends of the "S" and make it parallel with cap and base lines
love that "a""-I will certainly try that!
"and the letters of "sea" either overlap or give them some space in between "
- been playing with that for hours..grr.. will try some more.
anyway, i'll have to go now for an hour or two.. hope to meet some of you here later tonight!
THANX A LOT so far!!
- DutchBoy0
"what says film though."
i don't see what you are questioning, lara?
the name? i didn't make that up, the festival was already named that way.
or do you mean legibility?
please let me know!
thx.
- tough-actin0

you could have the tail of the f connect to the tail of the s to mimic a reel to reel perhaps. i have this really cool book called American Trademarks and it's from the 70's and there are all sorts of similar type treatments. i'll scan trhough and see if there are some cool ideas.
