I have seen alot of youngsters participate in the design/creative community lately. Since the coming out of the digital revolution, computer has been priced cheaper for the masses.
But there's one thing that didn't surprise me to happen. Most of the new coming artists (I state not all of them, exceptions ofcourse made), use their computer as a digital resource and not anymore as a tool to create something.
In my eyes it seems these people just let the limitations of the software and hardware create their piece. But the hardware & software is just a small tool for executing the concept. More and more work that I see seems to be without a concept, but done by the possibilities of software (and hardware ofcourse).
How many of you people know the original typesetting? Analogue Desktop Publishing, making projects by hand? The peeps born around '77 - '84 maybe.
What do you think about this? Do you agree or ?

Youngsters today will use their computers in a different way you could even dream of, stil learly days... but think of the stuff that will be about in 10 years time.

10 years time?
PHP 12.3.4 and your CSS still wont work.....

He's got a point tho. Instead of it just being the designers vision, with the computer a tool to create it - it's become a collaborative project between the artist/designer and the computer.
Symbiotic relationship where the computer is becoming as much the artist as the humanoid that tries to manipulate its output. Freakin cool!

I think a small group of people will always be minded in using the computer as a tool instead of an idea generator...
But I agree, some youngsters make stunning stuff which you could even dream of. The unexpected side of developing in a multimedia society these days.
When I was born, internet didn't even excist. And at the age of 12 I didn't had my own cell phone :)

This makes me think of Hollywood. No plots in a mainstream movie anymore. The digital artist is the talent and everyone else is just going for the ride.

'Creativity 1.0' release date 12.12.04 - "born after '84?, let us let you get marvellous ideas for your design projects with this piece of software..." etc... Only problems is, anything you type in will always give you the answer, "Use Arrows & some gradients and a stag's head"

the fact is that the globe is overpolulated by undertalented designers with no originality, hence the 'trendism'
There are many people out there with great ideas who create them (in the end result) on a computer, its just that 90% just want the latest 'stencil effect' or whatever, and they dont even have the initiative to figure out how its done, so they're all n NT going "How do I wipe my gay anus? Is there a filter for that"

hehe. some people still don't understand that it's the procedure and knowing what you did behind a design that counts. Design without a concept sucks for me, but doesn't solve your cliƫnts problems or communicates differently than expected.

hmm, an intresting thread, this is kinda rare at nt... keep it alive please.

I became very unpopular with this point on Flashkit, in the "site crit" forum. Everyone was very complementry about how another persons site looked. Then I came stomping in with "where's the idea?"....I soon became quite unpopular. :(
The conceptual part is the best bit of designing. The oooo doesn't it look nice bit, is secondary and can be a chore on bigger jobs.

Dancer, doesn't matter you're getting unpopular. The people who criticize you are the noobs of amateurism I guess. Real professionals can cope with criticism which has a good influence on their thinking, creative solutions and making your skill sharper and better. I wouldn't mind those comments...
it's pro's versus noobs

I definitely agree that at least 70% of design out there nowadays has no vision, and I admit that when I was in school all I really wanted to do was learn the trendy effects and all that jazz. But it is so much more satisfying when you think of and then execute a great concept that most everyone just "gets."
I would also say that there are probably far too many firms out there that hire designers based on what they can do within the program than for their conceptual skills. Obviously having both is ideal, but it takes more than a few months to get to that level.

Was it really any different before computers exsited though?

At the time software and computers weren't around you had to think yourself to come up with an idea, a concept or a vision (name it). Now alot people just make stuff without knowing what they make, as they just do a nice filter here, some nice photoshop effects there and it's created. It looks nice, but designing is just like a relationship.
YOU CAN'T LIVE WITH LOOKS ONLY! If the looks doesn't have content, you have something that is worthless and not increasing your qualities. It must be challenging to make a step forward...

I'm sure there were people who said that Letraset rub-down lettering and Xerox copiers were taking away originality too...
- JamesEngage0
I don't agree that everything has to have a 'concept'...
Can't your conpcept be purely 'information design' for example?
- reaction0
but if you send out information you need to have a concept to communnicate the info :)
- meok0
Why be so anal about design? Some of the best stuff I've seen have no concept at all, just visual exploration.
- tara|gee0
not to get off th e lack of concept but - so many people have garbage typography - completely unreadable...
and pre computers all i can say is you had to use what you had! if you sent out for type and it was wrong - that was TS for you :P
