I definitely agree that at least 70% of design out there nowadays has no vision, and I admit that when I was in school all I really wanted to do was learn the trendy effects and all that jazz. But it is so much more satisfying when you think of and then execute a great concept that most everyone just "gets."
I would also say that there are probably far too many firms out there that hire designers based on what they can do within the program than for their conceptual skills. Obviously having both is ideal, but it takes more than a few months to get to that level.
