Does it matter? Not everyone understands the full picture of almost anything, prose, painting, music, etc...you're asking alot of a piece of design to make all ends apparent to all people all of the time.

I gave a sony palystation tv ad I designed meaning by hiding codes that I didn't like Plymouth Argyle... does that count? :)

i think it matters to certain extent otherwise the concept wouldn't be such an important part of design. Of course not everyone has to understand the concept, but the more clearly it's communicated ... more viewers will understand it. I suppose i'm preaching to the choir here. just thinking out loud ;)

also... if you owe a sketchpad you are on the right route.
- chocodog0
i'm in debt several sketch pads ... oh, you meant "own a sketchpad"?

In architecture schools the computer is still a tool that comes at the very end of a design. The art of sketching and drawing is still seen as the foundation of architecture. The main argument is ofcourse that with a computer you are unable to draw anywhere anytime directly and therefor is not benefiting to your creativity.
How this applies to other forms of design I don't know. It very much depends what kind of webdesigner you are. IA Designers ofcourse have little use of sketching where a more print-like webdesigner might profit more from it.

While there are lot's of new, fresh young designers out there, right behind them is another batch of ultracool/ultrahip designers that are making there mark younger and sooner than previously thought. that's right folk, young designers right out of college better think about hanging it up now, step bacl and get ready for the new... baby graphic designers.
their work is both cool and illiterate...

just pick up a pen and draw the shit out of it.
Draw till your face turns blue from looking down and your hand cramps.
Then draw some more...er, I dunno... wtf?

how would your top-10 list of best designers at the moment on this globe look like? (are they oldschool, or the newconomy age?).
- E__________0
First of all what kind of designers are you talking about. Second I think there is so many copying going on that it is very hard to stand out as a designer these days. Third I think it is better if you ask what your top-10 artists are, because design can be found in anything and therefore your influences come from all kinds of artists, not just print or webdesigners (film, photo, advertising, architecture, musicians etc).

E____ true, was alittle miscommunicating there.. :) So I change my question in this thread to :
how would your top-10 list of best artists at the moment on this globe look like? (are they oldschool, or the newconomy age?).

Well it is still a hard question to answer. Being more into architecture and film myself ( I only design websites to make a living ) I get a lot of inspiration from those sources. Not so much the end-result but reading about the whole creative process and what their influences were. For example some of the books of Rem Koolhaas are a must read even for non-architecture ppl. Film the same. Also I guess it is important to experience live (ups / downs / relationsships) to the fullist in order to mature your own creativity. So I guess a lot of inspiration comes from live itself.

Living, experiences and other things that happen to you influences your work and style.
