Hey all, I'm still in the concept stages of developing a logo for a company called General Gear. info about their company can be found here:
www.generalgearco.comso here's what I've come up with that is on the right path that they like, but they still want "more". what "more" they want is so vague that I am stuck for ideas now because they wont' accept this the way it is:

Thoughts: 1. The gear imagery is really familiar already. Might try something a bit more abstract. 2. Right now the words and mark are just floating near each other. Not really tied to one another at all.

the mark does look like gabocorp's old logo. but i can't seem to find it.

i think i'll play around with the positioning after they have chosen which font they like. they haven't decided on anything yet sadly, so i have no direction... they just say they wanna see "more."

Who can forget Gabo. I used the internet archive and it took me back to 1999 to find this:

gottal love the wayback machine.

haha well it's got a G in it... other than that i don't see much more similarities.
i'll work on tying the mark to the type after a typeface has been chosen.

that wasn't the one i had in mind........

Maybe this one? (let the trailer load and you'll see it in red):

Keep making more until they like one. Play with the positioning with both fonts. Change up what you have so you don't have to think of anything new, all the while you'll be giving them 'more.'

well these responses are definitely better than I expected. I'm still fresh out of college and i expected a few flaming posts. Check out what I've done with the word mark. (apparently they really want blue)...

for my last post... do you think having the crossbar from both A's cut out is overkill??

try it both ways. lets see.

Try a few more font choices that represents the technology and industry. Something more industrial looking. Maybe Eurostile. I noticed the 3d gear they have is 8 wedges/--maybe simplifying the gear shape will help. Try a different position with the gear/sprocket on the left side. Try the word Gear smaller and underneath like in their existing logo. Try a more grayed down blue or silver gray color to get the metal look. Good luck.

I'd say keep it out for consistency’s sake. But then again I’d say a lot of things.

the type (avant garde) doesnt go witht e look and feel of the compnay and the gear illustration...the a's are vert strght use a font with a lil more fluidity motion...
- Dublao70
I agree with what zedvox said. If your going to use a gear think of the motion that a gear makes. Try to find a font that reflects that.......
......like I said, I could tell you all sorts of things to do, but I don't know whether or not you really want to listen to me.

Looks a bit familiar. I was instantly reminded of the VW logo:
The character "G" inherently has some "gear like" characteristics that you might be able to use to your advantage to develop a more clever, less literal solution.
Also, the idea of gears suggests inter-play between two or more objects. One is useless without the other. Developing some directions based on a concept such as this not only represents the company's tangible product but also suggests strong business-to-customer relations.
Good luck,

not liking the gradients and dropshadows. try using a capital G and playing with the positive and negative space of the cogs of a gear. with a long name like general gear, go for a strong mark and simple type treatment. and stay in black and white till you get past concepting. don't let the company dictate colors yet unless you've gotten to that stage or they are absolutely demanding it.

yeah i had come up with some concepts some weeks ago, one of them were two G's set together in a way that it looked like they were two cogs turning. it was pretty smart but they didn't like it... this was one of the few icons that they actually did like. i know it looks like the VW logo, but the client is horny for 3D logos for some reason.
It's pretty frustrating. Every good idea that I had, the same ones that you guys and gals are givng me, the client didn't like... so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I can't tell my bosses to shove it and do what I (read: "we") would like to see as their logo, rather my bosses are agreeing with whatever the client thinks is right... which is laughable because we all know what the client likes to see...
can someone say Comic Sans?
