not liking the gradients and dropshadows. try using a capital G and playing with the positive and negative space of the cogs of a gear. with a long name like general gear, go for a strong mark and simple type treatment. and stay in black and white till you get past concepting. don't let the company dictate colors yet unless you've gotten to that stage or they are absolutely demanding it.
