lowimpact, although i was hoping to center this thread on reviews and comments on reviews of the movie, i am making an exception to follow up on your thought...
dude, you are absolutely right! it bothers me that people make it out to be so serious... that if Jesus really existed, then Christianity and theism must be true.
The reality is that many atheist historians don't question Jesus' existance at all. Furthermore, Muslims certainly don't question Jesus' existance either (and in fact identify him as a prophet, second only to Muhammad). And Jews also don't deny Jesus existance. They all don't agree with the biblical account of the resurrection of Jesus, but they certainly agree that he was a historical figure. People need to learn about logic and not be scared by history.
so right on man, way to bring the logic back to the game.
now back to your regularly scheduled program. reviews and comments on reviews please.

It's a good thing jesus wasn't killed in an electric chair in the modern era, you Christians would look funny withlittle gold chairs around your necks.

that jama article was as unnerving as the movie...as for the wrist/hand thing...it says right here:
Although scriptural references are made to nails in the hands (1), these are not at odds with the archaeological evidence of wrist wounds, since the ancients customarily considered the wrist to be a part of the hand.
thanks for the links xrusox

lowimpakt...
... it's all about faith... not proof...
... then again - the proves there if you do some research.
but strictly faith-speaking, recall the movie Contact.
Palmer Jos (played by Dazed & Confused's Matthew McConaughey -"there's a party over at the moontower') asked Jodi Foster's character (the God-doubting scientist) if she loved her father.
"yes, of course", she said.
"prove it" he said.
Faith.

proves = proof's

faith cant be proven by any logical or empirical means by its very philisophical foundation. I have read and thought about the notion of faith ever since I was in primary school long before Contact was poorly made. Very little of theology or philosophy can be proved beyond question and that is why faith is so powerful and so limited at the same time.
- abizzyman0
faith IS limited - it's black or white... no grey area to play around with.
Either you believe or don't -- whatever it is you are or are not puting your faith in.
Should I have quoted Carl Sagan directly? I don't understand the need to say Contact was poorly made --- I was using an illustrative way of showing that FAITH CANNOT BE PROVEN... there IS nothing to prove as that moment in Contact perfectly showed; faith isn't something scientific - it's in your heart - just like love.

"I never saw a moor,
I never saw the sea;
Yet know I how the heather looks,
And what a wave must be.
I never spoke with God,
Nor visited in heaven;
Yet certain am I of the spot
As if the chart were given."emily dickinson

current voice of G_d:
What life has taught me
I would like to share with
Those who want to learn...Until the philosophy which hold one race
Superior and another inferior
Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned
Everywhere is war, me say warThat until there are no longer first class
And second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man's skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes
Me say warThat until the basic human rights are equally
Guaranteed to all, without regard to race
Dis a warThat until that day
The dream of lasting peace, world citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion
To be persued, but never attained
Now everywhere is war, warAnd until the ignoble and unhappy regimes
that hold our brothers in Angola, in Mozambique,
South Africa sub-human bondage
Have been toppled, utterly destroyed
Well, everywhere is war, me say warWar in the east, war in the west
War up north, war down south
War, war, rumours of warAnd until that day, the African continent
Will not know peace, we Africans will fight
We find it necessary and we know we shall win
As we are confident in the victoryOf good over evil, good over evil, good over evil
Good over evil, good over evil, good over evil

So, I just got back from seeing the movie with a good friend. Me, I'm not religious in that organized fashion, I've got a good grasp on faith towards a higher power, but as to what it is I don't know. I do know, the conversation in this thread is pretty insightful, it's good to know theres some thinkers out there. The movie was good and really made me wish I could grasp on to the christian faith, but I just can't something about it just pushes me the wrong way. Mel did a good job with the movie, it felt like a powerful story that everyone should here, and I've always thought The Bible was one of those. To me, an anagnostic it didn't seem forcive. He wasn't saying 'believe'. He was saying listen and ponder. I like that approach, too much religion is spoon fed down your throat. This movie's not for prudes though, the violence feels very real and as mentioned is sometimes put across sadistically. I couldn't help but put myself into every character's shoes through out the movie. I think it made you realize that all these people, were just men, ordinary men with problems and sin, and logic. If I were in the Romans position or even the head judaia, Caiphus' position, knowing their experiences, I'd easily have done the same things they did. I'm still thinking on the plot of the movie, it was uplifting through all the blood and guts and pain though. Don't be afraid to see it, Mel's not being a televangelist.
