ACTUALLY....
i have to say..those funny comments about sleeping your way to the top and such. blah blah.. guys think thats amusing to say things like that but... i think theres some truth behind those words. i think its really disgusting that most of the girls here in LA that get attention.. got where they are because they date or flirt with sucessful designer or buisness guys.
and well.. i think thats a fucking joke.

a date eh?
i think you misunderstood me.
now i refuse to mentor you.

It may sound stupid... but if you can't have a mentor, you can at least set goals and focus on something you want to learn or study..... there not much point switching from learning max/msp, php, 3d animation, etc etc. on a daily basis.
create some sort of project that makes use of what you want to learn and then tackle it.
good luck
btw how old are you?

i think that's bullcrap too!
i respect women that work hard and get ahead in the game thanks to their brains. I mean i'm a guy and i have to admit, i believe it is tougher for women to do so. there are shady reasons to why some females are ahead in some companies.

but... there are some things yu just cant learn froma book or on the internet.. you know what im sayin?
and im in my... 20 somethings. young and starting to feel kinda boxed in ... in my career right now.

if i was a well-known and respected designer in LA and received an email from you asking for some advice, or help, or mentoring.. i don't see any reason why i would say no.......
my advice: jerks suck, but if you keep talking to people, and keep positive, you are bound to meet some people who can tell you the words you need to hear..
good luck!

my experiences have been similar...
and i have expressed the same desire before, so i feel for you...
i understand the competiveness of the field, but sometimes the extent to which designers will feel diffident about sharing their knowledge out of a fear of the helpee surpassing them is just ridiculous - AS, illustration, xhtml, PS, whatever - i see them as tools to express ideas and communicate concepts effectively and refreshingly - concept has a much longer shelf life than medium, and a designer is only as good as his or her ability to use those tools to convey something of meaning - if those who've been there and done that so to speak continue to be afraid of providing a young up and comer with a bettered knowledge of the tools of the trade, well.....i think we might be swimming in a career field held back by its own paranoia
best of luck finding someone you can talk to, and bounce ideas off of -
might sound silly, but have you considered spearheading a designers group that would meet up and perhaps collaborate on projects together?

shellie, i totally understand.
i mentor young photogs, but sometimes it would be nice to talk to albert watson and some of the other masters for inspiration.

i think what it all comes down to is being comfortable with sharing ideas instead of being stingy bitches. if youre truely great.. you'll still be truely great even if you help someone else become great too. and im not just talking about giving away trade secrets either.
it seems like the only people who help each other out are a small.. tightly knit group of people and they never let anyone else in their little circle. and.. well piss on that! it's so 10th grade.
