is there such thing as a mentor anymore? Do they exist?
I remember my mom and my dad telling me about the wonderful people who they met when they were younger who invested time and interest in them to help them grow in whatever career they were shootin for.
why aren't there artists/buisness people in our industry out there who've made their money had at tons of success giving back a little. (and i don't mean giving back as in posting on newstoday)
there's something terribly wrong with that. karma man... give back and you will receive.
i help out when i can... but i feel like i need some kind of mentor myself.
it just bums me out. i really wish people were nicer in our industry when it comes to stuff like that.

fuck i need a mentor. i have a lot to learn. i get no respect at all and my design skills definately need to improve a whole hell of a lot. i need to become a better programmer also.. and i wish someone would sit down with me and explain a little about dealing with clients.. share experiences.. etc. maybe work on a few things with me.
i tried that at my job.. or asking people around me but it seems like everyone is more interested in money than being a human being.
weird cos giving back a little really wouldnt take anything away from them. it might actually help them too.

I totaly agree with you Shellie!
And this is not only in graphic design. There is no more mentor at all in everything!
Baby boomers took everything and keep everything.

I had a mentor back in 1992, taught me lots about the business of designing, I miss that old geezer.

I think apprenticeships should come back. Some photographers still do it.

Shellie, why don't you check out AIGA or some sort of org? I hear the LA chapter is pretty good.
I have found some support from my peers there and also get alot from guest speakers and events...like tonight, for example, Michael Vanderbyl is speaking here.
Also, find some designers you respect, look up too and contact them. I emailed Stefan Sagmeister once when I was very discouraged and he emailed me back an awesome, inspiring email. Reach out, girl!

self-mentoring is self-improvement

but monkeyshine...
if i need a mentor that bad.. wouldnt i maybe not have the money to spend in an AIGA membership?seems kinda weird.. you have to buy someone's attention.

Find someone you admire and become thier friend.

you know shellie, it is something i've been pondering a lot lately as well.
occasionally we have classes come in to visit us at work and it make sme smile. i like talking to the kids and telling them about all the kinds of stuff you can do. to watch their faces brighten.
hell, i even pass out my email address to kids that really seem interested. i love the way their eyes widen when i say "and SOME folks i know went on to design video games" immediately followed by gasps of wonder.
fuck, maybe we should be teachers? no money in it, but .....

people are insecure, maybe they are older and while they know a hell of a lot about design and business, they may feel threatened by younger people with a better grasp of technology and trends, everybody wants the new thing.
People have less time and more pressure, markets are unstable, loyalties are thin.

you can always get a mentor the old fashion way.... find someone who works is successful in the industry your interested in and hook up with him for a year or two to learn the ropes... it could work out, you get laid and you learn...

you got that all wrong brandelec
masturbation is self-improvement.
I think the internet replaced the need for a mentor... nowadays you have to get on peoples nerves on various forums to get the info you need.
