ok so i handed my notice in today at work because i don't want to travel 3 hrs a day there and back. simple enough. but they offered that i work only 3 days per week on a contract basis 3 months at a time. i am asking a bit of advice as to what you peeps think.
say i'm on £100 per year for example (obviously i'm not) should i be asking for like £90 per year part-time or the same amount, or more? cos i'll be freelancing as well. so should i just charge them my daily rate as i would anyone else or do i give them a special rate for the regular work? Hmmmmm.....
please don't tell me to search because it's already been done before or i will have to flick your testes really hard.

well as i have no testes, i'll take a stab at this.
if i charged that fictitious £100 now for regular full-time work, and instead of coming in 5 days a week i cut that to 3 (and the work was cut similarily) then i'd charge £60. its steady, you're not reaming them and you still have time to do freelance.
i have done this and it worked out brilliantly, but its not for everyone.
will they not let you telecommute on the other 2 days and keep your regular salary? that's really what i would push for.
- shutdown0
i agree with sputnik
the web is good enough that you don't need to be in the office
so you can work for them 3 days at the office,2 days at home and freelance

and you're contracting = more bling
- rasko40
ya, with Jevad, more... take into consideration if you can get work easy enough though I guess..

You have the opportunity to negotiate a higher rate of pay. You will be a contract worker with out the benefits and security, and they obviously are interested in you doing work for them. This is the time to negotiate. I quit a job a few years back and ended up still doing contract work for them for years. In the 1st month I made what I would have made in 3 on a project by project basis.

telecommuting would be nice but they don't like that too much. i think i will ask for more based on a contract daily rate. i'm not too bothered about keeping the three days so i can be a bit cheekier. they'll try and skant me though. they always do.
thanks.

I'd negoitate 70-80...
and forget about working at home for two days... they'd find excuses to get you in... such as there is a meeting today etc. etc.
Instead make a clean break, see if you can get your days
off confirmed... and make a stab at building up your freelance work... you are in a fantastic opportunity that you are being partly funded, and you're building up a portfolio of work both freelance and contract.Plus... How long do you realistically think you can work for someone else? If things go well you may be gradually decreasing the contract work, and possibly even taking on whole projects for them.
- mirola0
james, you mean 70-80% ? sounds reasonable. i like the idea of working for other people for two days a week
- JamesEngage0
yep... same as £70 -£80 if you're on £100...
I'm sure it's not just the travelling; is it?
- mirola0
well no. it's a bit boring but i feel a bit childish saying that.

Ya definatly think about the benifits/sickdays/holiday pay you will be loosing out on. Jesus, a 3 day week, that would be nice, i'd do tue wed and friday
- mirola0
yeah, tue, wed & fri would be good, spread the days out. ok, i'll keep you posted on what they say.

Why not charge them an hourly rate instead of a daily rate - that way, you can make those 3 days count and do 9-10 hours, and get as much as you would for 5 normal days for example - then, you've got the other 2 days to rake in the freelance work. Make sure you get a Ltd Co, pay less tax - all your work equipment, travel and food for those 3 days will be tax deductable! get your own pension, Holiday when you want, and buy a water bottle for your home (My Co thinks a Water bottle is a benefit!!!)
Bob's your uncle, you're rich and expanding your portflio! Much better Work/life balance
- BeachBoy0
Plus if you're contracting direct, no agency fee, means more dollar for you! Make sure you mention that when "Negotiating"
- JamesEngage0
you need to be realistic though... they're not goin to be happy if they're suddenly paying you double, especially when all of a sudden you start working later than you normally would...
the key is not to take the piss
- mirola0
they just offered me 150 per day but i think i can push for a little more. it sounds very tempting at the moment because i know they'll keep me on for a while.
thanks all for the advice, it's really good to speak to people who know about this stuff.
