"Carson turned the designer into a rockstar" lol yeah right. like no designer wanted to be a rockstar pre-carson? like everyone wanted to be this gray unknown guy/girl.

...and the ripple effect of this, is the creation a load of Dereks.

the problem whit carson is that he has no concept;for example sagmeister,of the same generation has concept and therefore He will never be outdated..carson on the other hand...i have respect for him what he did.but he should stop..its like muhammed ali that wants to box again.

isn't there something to be said for developing your own style, and then keeping it as your own rather then being swayed by each new trend? Yes you will not always look fresh, but who cares? As long as you like your own work.
- ********0
Yeah, but when your own work does not communicate, then the style is irrelevant huh!
- Mimio0
Well it communicates style. Style is temporal. So his work says...
"I'm on my way out".
"Nothing lasts"
"Aren't I clever?"Much like rock n'roll lyrics.

sucks to be this guy, or maybe not...
- ********0
Indeed Mimio, he had his day in the sun.
- grayhood0
you guys are right, he should just hang himself. in fact everyone who is now longer 'relevant' should hang themselves. Three cheers for euthanasia!
Hip! hip!...

sagmeister's concept:
self mutilation = edge
- grayhood0
haha, nice.
- Mimio0
Sagmeister knows there's a way to connect to with people in a cerebral way. Much like an actor does with his audience. In fact his work is more honest because of it's self-deprecation. In that piece he's actually saying he knows what's it's like to be a student, while at the same time satisfying his visceral obsession along with the same obsession students generally have with the body. Kind of making fun of students and himself at the same time.

or this guy....

Ive seen Carsons new book. Like some of it. Some pages stink like satans asshole, but some are brilliant. The thing about Carson it was never to tell the design community that this is the "style" or look of graphic design today. I feel hes here to say "what if?" remember grunge type? raygun? when his first book came out... have u seen anything liek it? hes here to stir some ideas, expand the idea that graphic design is more than just blue/orange combo that design is more than clarendon.. that design is more than scanning wood board and putting some cool person made out of vectors. I admire him for pushing graphic design.. something that is suppose to be so clear and communicate into a more muddy area such as fine art where everything is questioned and stripped down with more ideas questions and confrontations to be discovered.

by the way guys, we're talking about david carson, here, not (inert rockstar 'web dziner' name here). the man was and is far more than a cool flashy URL. Like his work on not, he is the most impactful art director of our generation, and changed type/design forever.
you guys would flame saul bass or paul rand if they were here to put out a new book.
- Mimio0
Let's not compare Saul Bass & Paul Rand with David Carson. It's like comparing Schubert & Mozart with Eminem.
- Skylark0
dont like it.
- rasko40
"he is the most impactful art director of our generation"
well that may be your opinion.
