He did wunderful things but I agree that this book is a waste of paper.

losers in every sense of the word
- solmo0
Carson is 1 person. So that would be loser. Altough I do not think he's a loser. Noooooo.

wow!

hehe,
so does bad design = ok art?
if one labels Carson's work as art does it autmatically divorce it from having any meaning? or does it not have any meaning to begin with?
- thinkmule0
art has meaning. Design has meaning. What is your point?
Or do you mean concept?
- andre_k0
what is the meaning or concept in carsons work? - none, i've heard him say it himself.
- unknown0
andre what would you do if he slept with your sister?
- agentfour0
who defines what 'good' is anyways?
each to his own.
- rabattski&rabattski0
yadda yadda yadda. it doesn't really matter does it? like evertyhing needs to mean something. that's art by the way, total different game than design. and actually the lacking of a concept is a concept in itself. and i seriously don't think that any designer starts the day with the thought: today, i'm gonna make something that means something. hells no.
anyways. i'm a big carson fan, although i don't like everything he did (really nice stuff in the new book by the way) i think the design community owes him shitloads of respect. every designer after him plucked the fruits from his labour. who are the designers who piss on him now. unthankfull bastards. although he in order should be paying respect to lissitzky (but that's my opinion).

It is good if it communicates what it has to communicate.
excuses for the bad english but u know what I mean.
Carson is not a pioneer anymore.
- rabattski&rabattski0
carson is not a pioneer anymore? and? so? so you think that if someone has been a pioneer once they *always* should be a pioneer? and if not, that they lose all their credibility? it doesn't matter what they have done in the past? isn't that a wee lill bit designer bitching? think so.

its just a fact. he did not lost his credits. i just think that you have to renew yourself.
- solmo0
i like your work rabatski
your my hero
- rabattski&rabattski0
cheers mate!
well. ok. that is true. if you don't renew yourself than you're just a monkey doing the same trick over and over again. which is not something to strive at but still a lot of people make money this way. although that is no reason a tall. anyways, in carson's case i do see differences from his older work. more simplicity, less details, but still a good eye and feel for it. on the other hand, he inspired me a lot back in the days so in my eyes he has a lot of credits to fuck up. it's just that a lot of people tend to diss carson right away without actually knowing who they are dissing and how much he has done for us. know what i mean? then again, this designers world is pretty rough, almost bitch like.
- solmo0
Indeed. There are some mean bitches walkin around in our small designers world.
But its a nice world. I like it.

Carson as a style was interesting intuitive, yes, but Carson as a designer, his work shocked but failed to challenge.
Take raygun for instance, he pissed the writers at raygun because the legibility of their text was lost in the chaos of Carsons layouts.
- jevad0
I don't think there was anything chaotic about carson's work in Raygun
- rabattski&rabattski0
i think it didn't fail in challenging. if it would have failed than it wouldn't have been copied by a lot of people. it was also challenging the whole issue with legibility of reading. talking about "meaning" his thing was form over function in which i partly agree since design isn't art, it's applied art and bound to rules.
i agree that from a reader / writer point of view carson wasn't a favorite. but his approach to this started a discussion about it and was also an eye opener for other designers in how far you can push it. although most didn't aspire to make it unreadable (at some parts) by carson it sort of gave them a glance on what you can do with typography etc.
- rabattski&rabattski0
i mean, be honest, raygun wasn't *just* a nicely designed mag. and my bet is that everyone here has that carson/raygun book. the blue one.
