Prepare for a rant......
I'm bloody sick of hearing students and designers bang on and on about how cool Japaese design is and how much they want to go to Tokyo and how wicked fucking Akira is and how WOW the packaging is and being fascinated by Japanese writing having no idea what it says. And then trying to emulate this Japanese-ish style on their own stuff and how they want to learn Japanese and just going on and on and on about bloody Japan!
Rant ends
Some japanese design is nice. I prefer the older wood cut stuff to this sort of modern neon zanyness we seem to be bombarded with.

Japanese internet design is crap.
Japanese advertising is either surface blah or cute.
Japan is a stupid filter. Take anything lame from another country populartize it there and bam you have something cool and kitchy.

Oh yeah also -
Those pencil holders that pop shit out like a swiss army knife are fucking dope.

Zeroblade, could you please explain a bit more? Some more on the difference from where you are from?
donal, thanks for the links, but I'm looking for opinions from a foreigners point of view.
SP0RTYTHI3F, thanks, but again, I am not looking to hear Japanese views, nor example pages as stated in the previous post. I want to hear your opinion.
Blofeldt, If you know a lot about Japanese wood cut please give me your take. It is in the sphere of design, it attracted you, and that's what I want to hear more about.
Skylark, imagen that I am a Swede in Japan. :)
steak&liquor, what's "surface blah"?

" zeroblade, could you please explain a bit more? Some more on the difference from where you are from? "
Where I'm from has been influenced by the JP long before the US was... I may be wrong but I think the anime craze began from Dragonball-Z.
Culture makes a world of difference and the world different.
The culture (now) there is anything goes, hence you see a lot of trash designs that are well accepted, as well as those which stem from the deep history that they have (beyond just the samurais and ninjas that are often misintepreted).
Look beyond the big-eyed anime and the plastic neon-lights and maybe you'll see some soul and not just some photoshop effect.
No, I'm not Japanese. Can't speak ten words with it.

there were some nicely designed Japanese Tee's over at http://www.threadless.com that were in the running for being produced, but not sure what you were referring to exactly.
- Peter0
"not sure what you were referring to exactly"
Again, I'm not refering to any specific design.
I see a lot of people here saying how they love Japanese design.
So I'm simply asking;
- what is it that you like about it?
- and how is it different from the equalent of where you are from? That is, what makes that design unique from a foreigners point of view? (foreigner being person outside Japan)

"The culture (now) there is anything goes"
Zeroblade, I would disagree, but that's for another thread.
"Look beyond the big-eyed anime and the plastic neon-lights and maybe you'll see some soul and not just some photoshop effect. "
Again, I'm not looking for the big-eyed anime you speak of, or Japanese design at all actually. I'm looking for foreign views on it, as mentioned in just about every post from me in this thread.
Photoshop effects? What are you talking about?Ok, skip the first question "what is Japanese design". Please reply only on what makes Japanese design unique seen in the point of view from a person outside Japan?
- the_user0
what makes it unique to a foreigner? I don't think a damn thing other than some people find kanji exotic.
What makes it unique is the cultural and socialogical paradigms that drive visual and aural presentations in japan. Once you're able to see Japanese design from within the Japanese cultural perspective, that's when things really get interesting. Far too complex a concept for this little text box though.
just an opinion.
