Doing something for work, and partly just being curious:
a) What is Japanese design (to you)?
b) What is the different from the design where you are from and Japanese design?

a) Japanese design is stark and quiet design. It's elusive and tricky.
b) Design in Toronto, does the job, it's tough and rough, and Japanese design is more beautiful.
(thinking more about industrial design than graphics, hope that helps some..)

i guess out here, i think, design (graphics too, look at bruce mau) and architecture is very formal.
it seems that stuff here is built mostly to withstand the elements... heavy on solving the problem, light on making it beautiful. perhaps japanese deisgn isn't more beautiful, so much as toronto design being ugly? :)

i think you are breaking down the design style
there are many different style like accompanied by regional culture.
the traditional culture is reserved and clean (based on archtechture)
where as pop culture based has loud 'in ya face' style..
others just being plain old brilliently crazy.

Sorry my terms weren't that clear. I mean that a lot of Japanese sites I browse are all very cutsie i.e. rounded corners, blinding colours and little furry characters, like the one I linked to. So thats what I'd class as Japanese design. Its the same bubbly look seen on adverts etc.
But then there are western sites that "try" to be Japanese in their design and end up looking like something out of Hackers just with kana splashed around.
I think I kind of side tracked with my posting. Getting into "real Japanese design" and what a lot of westerners percieve as "real Japanese design".
I'm just not doing a good job of explaining myself am I! :P

Hehe, it's ok, I know what you mean.
But besides that style (which almost all of us has come to like), what is it that makes it Japanese design (except for Kana as you mentioned)?
It doesn't necessarly has to be in web or graphic design...

just outside harajuku this monster building caught me with it's quietness. awesome how much light went through those windows. i remember it being very tall, ie. the ceiling on each storey must have been very tall.
to me? very stark. but very elegant and quiet.

Details. Extreme attention to details. That pretty much covers everything.
Sweet-ish design is flat and lifeless where Japanese design has more mystique to it...hmm, just thinking out loud, probably doesn't make sense. Shout if you want me to elaborate.

they were totally separate from the rest of the world for 200 years. enough time to made unique culture. also, it`s in their mentality - discipline, details, letters. they put their history in design. mixed with west influences is what you get.
and...narita inspected is answer for your question.

Actually, I'm sure they "made" their culture a bit earlier then 200 years ago.

But how does that different from todays designers? Most of us have discipline and attention to details...is it the degree you are talking about that makes the design Japanese?

but your first statement was that they have been seperated from the world, and that made them unique.
I know your point, it certainly has caused a lot of interesting outcomes. But then, what is uniqe? Is it the mixture? Is it really Japanese? How about tokidoki.it? That's an Italian guys website, drawing Japanese girls in panties. That is another perception of Japanese design, almost a tribute. And also, you might find design close to that over here too."narita inspected is answer for your question."
I own the book. But over that, I have my own opinions. I live in Japan, I work with Japanese designers. But what I asked for was your own perception of Japanese design.
Obviously, design is big.
