Its a bunch of guys throwing around a BALL, a BALL people- for millions of dollars and everyone has a boner. I just dont get how such a thing is hyped. I rather watch my dog catch a BALL for free. ITS A FREAKIN BALL!!! Whatever man.

sounds like someone got picked last, more than a few times, on the BALLfield.

sport is the best thing on the planet, only second best to sex.

It's not about the ball, its about metaphor. Call it modern day mythology

easy Carlos, I love sports too, but everyone is able to have their own opinion. Even if it's wrong, lol! ;) I love Sport! All of it, it's good for the mind and good for the soul and the body.

Yeah I'm gay cause I dont like watching sweaty dudes chase around a rubber object. And I forgot only straight people enjoy such a thing, I read in Maxim magazine that enjoying such things is what MAKES you straight, along with 10 cent wings and Budwieser beer nights.
Yeah fagboy me can't fit in at the local sports bar with a bunch of fat men and use to be high school bullies wearing jerseys with some other dudes name on them. I tried to jump into the patry while they were doing the "wave" chanting, "LET"S GO BLAH BLAH LET"S GO!" but silly me was too afraid I'd break a nail.

I'm with you radiosilent.
I don't get it too. There are tons of other things far more interesting than watching some guys runing after a ball and making fortunes out of it...

Am I correct in guessing, Radiosilent, that you don't own a pair of "Sunday sweats" suitable for wearing and planting your ass on the sofa for the duration of at least two football games and an hour of pregame shows? A pair of sweats suitable for stains of all kinds that may occur during this game viewing that may or may not include nacho cheese, beer, soda, hot sauce, barbecue sauce, or saliva?

whoa hahahahaha
batty boy alert
if you see sport as a bunch of guys running after an object your iq is a one digit number

finally, a thread that's intelligent.
I am a sports fan thru and thru. But I'm not interested in basketball. I sincerely dont care. I told this to someone and they asked me if I was any good at basketball as a kid. Of all the sports I played, basketball was the only one that did not come easy to me and really, I sucked at it. So extrapolation time > if I don't like baseball, I sucked at it as a kid. If I don't like football, I sucked at it as a kid. If I don't like sports, or don't "get it" I sucked at sports as a kid.
I'm thinking of changing my moniker to MVP

radio, you're sounding a bit like a 1930's dictator... from germany. Generalizing people in masses over 100,000's. That's sad. Sports have their place, yeah if you want to argue what they make, anyone would say most are over paid. But sports exist, if you're into them you're into them, if you're not you're not. But they've always existed in humanity to some nature. I don't like all sports, but when I play one I like, I'm deep into it.... aren't you competitive with anything in your life, take it as that. One designer with better skills than the other trying to win the job over you the one who could sharpen his skills. Booyah, I'd love to watch that on tv. Not.

IMHO I don't think that pro athletes are paid merely to move a ball around. I think they're being paid to pack stadiums and sell advertising. I think people watch these games because they want to see new records made and the envelope of human physical ability pushed to higher levels. Advertisers take advantage of this and pack the stadium with logos, buy time during commercial breaks, and try to get players to endorse their products.

Curious, Radiosilent, are there any sports that you play, or have played growing up as a kid?
As a kid I loved playing street hockey. My idol was Wayne Gretzky (back when he used to play for the Edmonton Oilers). I loved watching him play, that's where I got my inspiration to try new moves and become a better player. I think that someone who has no way of relating to the game in a similar fashion might view it as some guy being payed millions to push a puck around with a stick. However, there are those who love(d) to play and understand the hard work and dedication it takes to become proficient. That is where I feel the "hype" (as you so called it) comes from.

From this thread I can see a similarity between sports and the design profession.
Whenever we as designers see something very well done we have a fond appreciation for it, we are very well aware of the hard work that must have gone into it. However, there are people who can't relate simply because they do not know what goes on in the world of a designer. They may think "that's just another website, what does something like that cost? 500 bucks?"
Little to they know about the countless hours of concepting, design, typography, sound mastering, tweening, file size optimization, databasing, coding...etc etc.
Not trying to diss you, radiosilent, but I think your view of sports somewhat parallels this.

Radio- you like seeing your dog catch a ball? you should start watching ESPN2, there are some great dog competitions, I specially like the long-jump fetch distance into the pond. That is the coollest dog sport I've ever seen.

professional athletes that get everything they can out of their bodies to compete in a sport they love is so lame.
not to mention they make serious money and retire by 40.
i mean its just so stupid, i dont get it.

I played alot of sports as a kid. Baseball, football, basketball, soccer... I was on a team almost all year round for the majority of my childhood. I threw 3 no hitters, I have 3 trophys for soccer, and 4 for long distance running.
As soon as I claim to be anti- sports I get called, "gay", "weak", "stupid". "jealious", and a dictator of all things. And that is exactly why I got out of sports. The average mentality is ignorant. Sure, its not all but its most I've encountered, and I got out because I had deeper interest.
Growing up my heros weren't corporate athletes. My heros were family, friends, and teachers. I was inspired by the accomplishments that had some impact on society and a cause. A guy who threw the longest touchdown, or who can jump the highest means nothing to me more than a beer commerical. I rather buy a book written by a well writer instead of a jersey with somebody elses name on it.
Yes, athletes work hard but that doesn't mean they deserve more income than a rocket scientist. Sports are over rated and promote greed and ignorance all in the name of stategic ways to move around that ball. The kids playing at the local ball park are what the "game" is, this other thing is filler between the Blockbuster commercials. I see no game here, just a hope to make even more money next year and have some more suckers willing to wear the right colors and pay 9 dollars for another beer.
I am removed because its considered some precious accomplishment to know what team won the 1976 superbowl more than it is to know all of the 50 states of America. We have so much poverty and problems in this society yet we are willing to not only over pay but encourage giving this cash cow more praise.
So I tire of the attitude it promotes and the leeway that is given to a meathead in this country. So be it. In this search for identity in life you tend to cling on to things that best represent you and your beliefs and I do not relate to what sports try to convey. I have no interest in anything it tries to promote or sell me. The game isnt what ruined it for me its the players and most of the fans.
