"Growing up my heros weren't corporate athletes"
--Dude...when I was 10 as far as I was concerned he (Gretzky) was not a corporate athlete, I thought he was just a great hockey player. I was 10, and I was innocent. Do you really see something wrong with that??
"My heros were family, friends, and teachers"
--Are you suggesting that people can only have one type of hero?? My dad was just as much a hero (if not more) to me as any pro athlete, and I'm sure other people have similar views.
On another note, if you feel that your choice in heros makes you a better person than most, you've got some issues to deal with.
"I rather buy a book written by a well writer instead of a jersey with somebody elses name on it"
--Tell that to a 10 year old, I thought my Gretzky lunchbox was effin cool, looking back I still don't see anything wrong with that.
"The kids playing at the local ball park are what the "game" is, this other thing is filler between the Blockbuster commercials"
--I agree to an extent. But what would you suggest? The elimination of pro sports? A million scenarios could be thought up of what could be if that were to happen, but I think they'd all end up the same in the end: corporations will just find another level of sports that they will try to exploit for $$$. If not the pro level, would you rather it be at the college level? Highschool level?? How effed-up would that be!?
"I see no game here, just a hope to make even more money next year and have some more suckers willing to wear the right colors and pay 9 dollars for another beer."
--You see what you want to see. When I watch sports highlights all I see are great plays. When the commercials come on...I take a piss. How else would they pay for airtime?? and how else would I pee without missing anything??
"We have so much poverty and problems in this society yet we are willing to not only over pay but encourage giving this cash cow more praise"
--Then u'r disgust lies not in sports but in people. Realize, though, that the same could be thought of you. You think rocket scientists deserve more pay then pro athletes...but someome could argue "Why the fuck are we paying all this dough to float around in space when there are people starving out there!?!?" To be fair, that same philosophy could of course be applied to pro sports, so your thread should rant about people, not sports.
"In this search for identity in life you tend to cling on to things that best represent you and your beliefs and I do not relate to what sports try to convey"
--So bitching about consumer driven sports is what represents you?? You seem to cling to that one.
Please, radiosilent, don't think I'm just responding to you with hate or ignorance. Although you may feel you started this thread with a higher opinion, I believe it was misdirected and may come across as ignorant.

I really think this is going no where and I am sorry to anyone who I offended but I end still thinking pro sports is an over rated phenoneon and pro athletes get too much money for what they actually do.No, being ten years old and looking up to a great hockey player is not wrong or whatever in any way. I am not talking about ten year old kids. I am talking about adults. I am also not trying to prove holier than thou because I dont dig sports. Everywhere I turn something or someone is telling me why they do like them (yes even here) so I took the opportunity to express that I do not. As far as the "bitching about comsumer driven sports" being what represents me... no defending myself and being insulted when insulted does.

radio has some points people.
Now - I enjoy football, rugby, tennis, baseball, hockey and golf...among other things...but that the end of the day...the pro's who do these sports (except rugby!) are getting million and millions of dollars in wages and endorsements while millions and millions of people around the world starve to death.
It's pretty sick really. And sadly indicitive of the human race and it's current attitude.
- sexypixel0
ya, lets give all our money to starving kids and throw away our telivisions.
its not going to happen.
- sexypixel0
but your right jevad, it is sick. but watching starving kids eat isnt going to get good weekend ratings
- unknown0
if people eating horse rectum and bull testicles can get ratings, i don't see why starving kids eat can't.
anyway this thread is just too long for it's own good. you don't like sports, fine, but really there is no point in preaching to everyone here.
- jevad0
exactly.
This fucking world shouldn't be about WEEKEND FUCKING RATINGS.
end rant.
- scarabin0
maybe if we put them on an island with some weapons and a film crew and made them fight for it...
- sexypixel0
but it is, and it doesnt look like changing. i liked Micheal Moore pitching to the producer of 'cops'
he asked if he could do a serious called 'corporate cops' where detectives go in and arest the likes of enron execs etc. but the producer said it wouldnt get ratings unless the execs ran from the police in high speed persuits or jumped from 14 story buildings.

great thread. excellent views on both sides.
love the “sunday sweats” story.
i think that sports are our national religion here in america and i am curious just how much is spent on sports here. anyone know any facts?
i mean, think of hotel bills, private jets, food to feed one football team. i'm sure these figures add up quickly. then you have college sports, jr high club sports and tournaments... tons and tons of money and time.
money is a driving force for the activity... i guess its all in the name of “entertainment” radio finds no entertainment in watching the activity. some people find themselves emersed by sports. but, i think a major theme of radio's idea is to take into consideration why exactly do we participate and follow such a sheep-like standard?

Regarding my country's example I have to
rephrase Karl Marx's quote:'Soccer is the people's opium'.
Declining economy, growing unemployement, and what this shitty government does? Spends millions in the Euro 2004 event, fancy stadiums for highly in debt soccer teams, corrupted businessman, etc...
happy, happy, joy, joy!!!!
