IMHO I don't think that pro athletes are paid merely to move a ball around. I think they're being paid to pack stadiums and sell advertising. I think people watch these games because they want to see new records made and the envelope of human physical ability pushed to higher levels. Advertisers take advantage of this and pack the stadium with logos, buy time during commercial breaks, and try to get players to endorse their products.
