to clarify
the previous flashy site that Kioken did was hard to buy stuff on because you COULDNT
it was a promo and brand building site.
Now, I don't know who did this, or what their other branding stuff looks like - but if this site is actually following any brand standards - someone needs to get fucking fired.
the photos are fine
but the site offers nothing of the experience that a Barney's store does.
elegance, style, quality and, well - expense.
It's red and you can click things.
and it has a really annoying invisible tracking frame or something that makes everything flicker on my browser.there's no flashiness, no style, no sense of awe - things that you would think barney's would want to portray in their site.
There's no information - no shots of the barney's stores where they will really do their business - no explanation of the custom tailoring process or a general price range - NO call to action to get into a store where people are really going to make them money.
But you can buy ties.
Ties uncerimoniously lined up on white backgrounds.

I disagree with the steak&liquors idea that the barneys audience is a bunch of untech savvy 56k bound users. I think if you can afford to throw down 350.00 for a duffel bag or 5700 on a phone you probably have at least cable internet in your home and your probably pretty "hip" so youve been well versed in all the latest gadgets, so they could probably figure out the navigation. I think a user who buys from barney's expects more. The store, the site, the shopping bags all need to tell the customer they are cut above the average joe.
That being said I agree the shop and the experience should be seperate, but even the store could (and should) look better than that and could definately be better organized.
I could go on but i already feel geeky enough going this far.

I don't really mind the new site. I just don't like the red.
THE RED MUST GO.

I think its a better ecommerce site. They will make more money through it and at the end of the day thats all that matters.
granted its not a 'better' site if you are a design geek. but I bet more products are bought through it.

Be interesting to see their stats and how much they do shift....

I've never heard of Barney's or saw thier last site.
By readng this i guess the shops are pretty amazing. Would be nice to see some shots of them.Personally, If I was going to spend $1000 + on a watch i'd want to go and try the thing on first. I expect the only purchases through the site will be people buying presents or people who have previously tried the goods out. (Ok maybe not the ties)
I think the red's ok, shame they don't show the product on a model AND a shot of it on white bg.
I think it's quite a good and easy to use site. I think i'd have used flash for the shopping cart rather than having this flash html cross.

I read it and yeah cool... he kept the conversation going. Good critique. Branding not there... blah... Look of the site not syncing with the stores... blah...
The main deal is the look of the site is really the first problem but mainly its the structure and the ability to know that what you are looking at is all that they have.
The other point really is that people jock sites like they originally had and thats lame. The moving windows around shit was terrible. I dont remember it all that well but there were these little parts that were too techy for Moms and shit. Yeah there may be techy people out there that shop but always remember that there are quite a few rich people in the backwoods that would still like to buy your stuff... so start at the bottom. Or just go balls out like they did originally and expect to see sales slow.

the archive of the work is on my site.

I think that barneys could have still gone down the "buy stuff" road but in the vein of the new Dior site -- creating brand and commerce.
just my opinion.

target ads are cooler than barneys web site... hm...

i'd say the brief for the old barneys site was different to the brief for the new site. hence the new site has the purchasing ability
but as far as design and execution goes.
old barneys site wins easily.as a designer i'm a fan of design and execution.
the impact of this site really can't be played down.
a cornerstone in web design.

Hey Joshua,
What was the deal in the agreement with Barney's, did they pay Kioken off completely upon site delivery or they were paying licensing. I'm asking this 'cause I see that you have Copyright Kioken on the old Barney's site?
