i was referring, since he is planning on getting a new machine, that Premiere will NOT be made for the mac platform anymore. Adobe cancelled it's development since apple released final cut express.
Also, yes external drives can be up to par, but if he's getting a tower anyway he might as well have an internal drive (cheaper, less prone to failure). I've had 3 firewire drives in cases fail on me (lacie, OWC, and a generic one). just fyi

oh, and XP has been stable for me since i bought it.
snip: "statistics since 7/2/2003 3:54 PM" says the uptime on a laptop that's been up since it was plugged in when i moved:-)
- SaintWalker0
That's totally true, FW drives are more prone to failure because they can be accidentally disconnected while writing or reading...taht's not a good thing at all. Actually the Lacie that I was using (it's the vertical metal one) was one that had suposedly corrupted for someone so I took it, formated it clean and then partitioned it...partitioning is a BIG TIME good idea for large drives...external or not.
- jpea0
definitely:-)
i've been using a laptop exclusively for the past 4 months because i've been moving and such and thus, kinda have to have a fw drive to put all my essential stuff on, but i'm getting worried that someday it might fail again:-(
not sure what the heck i'd do.. all client stuff is on there and i have a slow 8x cdr in the laptop.. not fun backing up 80gigs of stuff to that!

Premiere is a joke.
FCP4 beats the hell out of any other video suite short of a full Avid system.
I don't know much about DVD authoring, but I dont think there is THAT much to it.
After Effects runs on any system just fine.
as for harddrives
you can add a second drive, or add infinite external firewire drives.
(handy for archiving old stuff if you have multiple ones)The G5 is probably gonna outperform any PC since FCP4 is or will be tuned specifically for the G5.
Apple's pretty good about making their professional software perform amazingly.

if you unplug a drive while working you've got other problems.
XP is stable if you remember to update it every month.
I hadn't updated my PC fully and last night it literally crashed 15 times in a row.
Updated it and it hasn't crashed.
Yet.OS X has never crashed on me. Ever.

use a zip drive ;)

If you are using XP Home, it sucks.
XP Professional and W2000 are solid. I have never had either crash in the last year and I am rendering animations, working in PS, surfing, and building models in another program - all at once.
It all comes down to what you like. I'll never buy a Mac because of compatibility. I want to find info and files, not to mention programs, that run on my computers.
Network Rendering is what workstations are good at, but it mostly depends on the software.
From what I've read, the new Premiere is every bit as good as FCP.

If you want to play games ,internet surfing, watch dvd movies, let your little brother spill soda on the keyboard or even punch your monitor when you lost at grand theft auto3, get a dell, they are great..
If you are serious about designing, why are you even asking???

man some of you are trully stupid....
I'm (as most people here) really broke so my qutotaion usally looks like price/speed. That of course doesn't mean that i don't want a fast computer. As a matter of fact the second i'm getting my finactial aid i'm upgrading my PC to P IV 2.8 Mhz with 1 GB of RAM. (right now i'm running on an old PIII and to update i'll have to change my motherboard plus my curent memory won't fit int the new motherboard). Anyway the whole update (including 80GB hd) will cost me $380. Not bad for a broke student.
Enough of personal stories.
For $800-$1000 you can get super fast PC with 20" monitor. That's why i'm always recomneding PCs, moreover MPEG2 compressors (DVD) on PC are far superior to whatever Mac has to offer. Then again, if i could run FCP on my PC i wouldn't think twice and let Avid XPress Dv go as soon as i can -- simply put there is no more userfiendly apps that FCP.

Maybe you crash because your hard drive's a mess .... maybe its not the WinXP fault .... it can be hardware issues ....
WinXP pro is very stable.
- benfal990
but you need to clean up your hard drive and windows sometimes ....
- mrdobolina0
meeklo, do you use a mac to design or photoshop and illustrator?
- unknown0
premiere a joke?
muhahaha
it's comedy time again
fcp is all hype
premiere and fcp do both the same things in a more or less similar way

"For $800-$1000 you can get super fast PC with 20" monitor."
Dude are you shitting me? Yah I guess you CAN buy a 20" monitor for $800...but it's gonna be a piece of shit...I don't understand why some people think like that...it's like those kids that rice their cars...they can't afford a real performace automobile, so they make their piece of shit Civic look like a racecar on the outside and do nothing on the inside....when if they saved just a little more and didn't waste any money on all that glowing bullshit and nylon tape they could probably afford a car that would kill as far as driving goes...like a simple Subaru Impreza.
I guess what I'm tryin to say is that you can get seemingly the same thing for a $1000 or $3000...and it's not just numbers...there are reasons why the thing that costs $3000 costs that much. If you're broke, and this is what you wanna do for a living, get the best shit you possibly can muster cash for so that you can be as productive as possible...that way you'll make that money back in no time. $3000?! Come on! That's a joke, that's a small web contract guys. I agree $3000 is steep if you wanna dick around, surf, and maybe play the ocasional game....but if it's your life, it's a bit different.
...and no you don't design with a PC or a Mac...not even Photoshop or Illustrator...you design with your head. You dont' have shit in your head, it won't matter what's infront of you and what it has installed on it. If you have the will and talent you can design on a fucking Pentium 1 or a Performa.

I would go with G5, but that depends on whether you are a Mac or PC guy
- Meeklo0
I use a mac, with a wacom table on photoshop and illustrator, and yes I design on my computer, only do sketches on paper if im away from the computer, I only like to work on the computer, here on the year 2003.
WHY?
- Meeklo0
premiere and fcp do both the same things in a more or less similar way
I really cant say much, cause I never used premiere that much, but I dont care if they now call it pro, I think its still an amateur software, or at least not taked serious in most of video agencies.
Of course, what matters is the brain that is controlling the tool, but, what would you think if on a f1 race track somebody showed up on one of those KIA's SUV?
- mrdobolina0
a wacom plugs into a pc and adobe makes both of those programs for pc as well. That was my point, in reference to your comment about 'serious' designers using mac's.

i would go for the mac technology.
