Which should I get if I plan to do DVD, video editing, and After Effects projects. Also can PCs do render farm type stuff like MACS They both are priced the same
- jevad0
a) don't get a dell
b) if you use mac's normally get a G5 - fuck it - get a G5 anyway
- kerus0
1) get the g5 and shut up, it's $1500 for the low end one w/ edu discount.
2) don't start another annoying freakin mac vs. pc thread

I'll shut up.. I just wanted some feed back. I needed some help from people who are in the know.

I am interested too. Thinking of switching later on in the year.

G5, cause they look better and will give you street cred.
- smd0
Mind you Im gettin a G5 later this year but for DVD stuff you might want to look into a PC cause you will have more authoring choices, and encoding cards that rock! DVD Studio Pro is awesome but Scenaris is most used professional program.

street cred is key.

well I have a G4 now so that's why I asked about the render farm thing. plus I'm not sure how the Dell PC works using AE. which system would be the better deal, faster, and such.
- unknown0
Can I just get a G5 case?
- unknown0
no. It would be an insult to everything pure and powerful that Apple represent.

for DVD editing and production, I would strongly recommend a PC over any mac. Way more choices, way more software. Mac's look nice on your desk, but my computers are all under my desk.
- clayko0
check out ABS computers. They make several set up for multi-media development.

I don't know which system you should get but if you do end up on the PC side, please don't buy Dell. Build your own. It is cheaper, and way less of a headache. Plus you'll always be able to upgrade really easy whenever you want.

PC are always faster don't forget that
Build your own PC and take your girlfriend to dinner with the savings

editing video on a pc sucks...buy a mac just to use FCP4 instead of premiere (although AVID DV XPRESS is pretty okay).
however, AE does run better and render slightly faster on PC's...but i am unsure about render-farming with PC...

yeah build your own PC (even though i'm a mac guy) and take your girlfriend out to dinner with the savings.... AND seeing as how she's a blowup doll and doesn't eat you'll save even MORE money! rock on dude!

"PC are always faster don't forget that"
WHAT are you basing this on? That's like saying ALL users who use PCs are ridiculous dorks...which they are not.
Have you guys failed to notice that we're talking about TWO 64 bit processors each running at 2GhZ with a 1GB bus each!? There is NO PC that would come close to this as far as compression and such, trust me. Yes you can get hardware specifically for that stuff, you can on the mac platform as well though. It is true that the PC side offers more software choices and that will likely be the way for a long time yet, but if you have 10 pieces of software and two are good then who cares at all about the other 8...they're not really choices are they?
PCs are faster when comparing things like the Flash player or video games which are specifically developed for PCs...actually not even the video games any more. That's all based on software...but if you have a Mac with software like Photoshop or FinalCut or whatever that's optimized for it....it will kill a PC that is "faster" than that mac. I HAVE tested this myself. My dual 500 G4 destroyed my friends AMD 1.3 GhZ doing extensive photoshop tasks...we're talking by minutes.
Anyway, so that's my take on things...hope it'll help you make a decision.

Get a PC
:D
- georgietexan0
yeah I know FCP better then any other video editing software. Also is DVD studiopro good for making highend DVDs for production. that will be new to me but I here it's easy to pick up. Why does this new G5 only have two harddrive bays? can you fit more in it? and what about Ancore? won't that work better with AE and premiere? alot of questions I know sorry but any help would be great I just want to make sure I'm getting the best deal for what I need. I could care less about street cred or looks. I'm ugly and my computer can be too.

The bandwidht tests proof it.
The G5 is less powerfull than the last Pentium IV. Make some search on the web ... Apple haved cheated the bandwidht test for the release.
For AfterEffects get a PIV 3.1Ghz (the new one with new technology stuff) Get a LaCie external hard drive 120Gb Firewire800 and get 2gig of RAM. Biggest RAMBUS's better.
