sexypixel, like I said I'm not hating on australia. to really love something you have to love it flaws and all. But there is this weird mentality in aus that you have to hype up all the good stuff and that if you even try to discuss the bad stuff then you are a hater.
I'm not dwelling on its negative past, just wanting to understand it so I can help make the future better.
I understand how it is the closest thing to perfection for you as well, my parents immigrated there from the UK in the 70s and my dad is like a born-again aussie. Living in the UK now I can see why the move was an englishman's dream.

I'll agree wit hyou that some australians have blind faith in their country, and take your points on board.
So what do you make of the UK, in comparison to Aus?

And good to see someone who talks openly about their country, warts 'n' all.

Well I say uk but typical aussie i have only lived in london. travelled around a fair bit of uk but not ireland yet. (going in august)
I love london mainly because there are so many different cultures here. In my neighbourhood there are arabs, west indians, asians, brasilians, trustafarians, old wealth next door to sprawling estates... pretty much everyone is represented. For art and design and musical inspiration, being surrounded by a swarm of different cultures mixing freely is really exciting.
The main thing that bugs me about the uk is the ingrained class system.

The main thing I miss about living in europe is being able to jump on a plane, fly for an hour or two and be in a whole new culture/climate and country. I envy you for that.
Living in Aus and being Irish my yearly vacation is spent going home to my family and friends so I dont get to see much else. Probably the same as yourself.
And man, get yoursef over to ireland, its only a few quid by plane. Get there before the summer ends. But I cant talk, i havnt been to new zealand yet. :/

I just got emails back from my mates in aus about that article. All met with healthy skepticism, phew!
One reply was "Rupert doesn't even make any effort these days to disguise the wet dreams
before they make it to print."

I currently live in Melbourne. I got back to Aust at the end of last year after spending two years working in London. I really love that town, and I got to see a bit of the rest of the UK as well.
I really miss it now, the mix of cultures and art scene like vespa said, is a lot greater than in Aust in my opinion, and the whole mentality is a lot differnet as well. Its as iff everyone is trying to play "catch up" with Europe and the US. But I don't miss the weather, and coming back home to beautiful beaches and a summer of surfing is nothing to complain about.
